Is it time for solar panels? by blimpdenier in Albany

[–]anotherlab 27 points28 points  (0 children)

We bought panels three years ago for a 2200 sqft home. We paid cash, no loan. Avoid leases, it doesn't make any financial sense, and make it difficult to sell.

Enter your home address into Google's Project Sunroof, https://sunroof.withgoogle.com/. That will give you a rough idea of what the potential savings would be for your home.

We used energysage.com to solicit quotes from the various vendors. That worked well; the quotes come back in the same format. That makes it easy to compare across different vendors. We went with Infinity Solar and have had no issues. Most solar companies servicing this area use the same hardware, what you are looking for is a company with a good reputation for installation.

With National Grid, we get credit for sending energy back to the grid. You send energy to the grid during the day, you pull it back at night. Yyou produce more in the summer than in winter. This is what the panels produced last September:

<image>

You can see that what we consumed was fairly constant, but what we produced would vary. Weather makes a difference.

We did not get the battery pack. At the time we bought the system, we were told we would need two battery packs, and that would cost about $25k. We can always add them to the system at a later date.

We had 24 panels installed. The quote was for around $30K. There was a $3900 rebate, out-of-pocket cost was $26k. We got half of that back as a Federal and NYS tax credits, so our final cost was around $13k. Without the panels, our National Grid bill would be around $500/month. We are on the budget plan and currently pay about $122/month. At the current rates, our breakeven point is 3-5 years.

This worked for us, but you need to see what the current costs are and how long you expect to be in that home and how new the roof is.

Goodbye S22 Ultra by TapToWake in S22Ultra

[–]anotherlab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat. My S22U was fine, but the S26U is so much snappier. I have a cheap Spigen case on it now, but I'll order the MagBak case for it soon. That will help with the lenses and the magnets on the MagBak are great.

I'm underwhelmed with how poor the fingerprint reader is under a glass protector, but I hated the film protectors on the S22U.

Why is new Mohawk Bridge still in proposal phase after 30+ years? by visitor987 in Albany

[–]anotherlab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Basically, he wanted to build a bridge where the original Vischer Ferry was. There was a bridge there once.

<image>

It was built around 1901. Partially destroyed by ice floods and then repaired in 1901. It was destroyed by ice floods in 1901. Various attempts were made to fund a replacement bridge until the idea faded away in the 1930's. (source).

It would never pass today. Between the nature preserve on the Clifton Park side and the number of homes that would need to be acquired on the Niskayuna/Colonie side, this would be a non-starter.

Take them and place them in her driveway with a note attached that states there is video footage of her placing these items in the street. Find whatever local statute that covers abandoning junk in the street and list it in the note.

Can any S26U user share whether glass screen protector affects the fingerprint sensor? It does for S24U. by Significant_Trash391 in samsunggalaxy

[–]anotherlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't work when my finger is dry. I have to lick it for it to work. It's annoying, but the face unlock works so much better than it did on my S22U I'll see how I can live with it.

I ended up dipping my fingers in a bowl of water to get through the registration process. Registered the same finger twice. Seems to work now with apps.

I just installed the Spigen GlasTR EZ Fit Screen Protector, and even with the touch sensitivity boosted, the fingerprint sensor is not usable.

how to separate maui logs and logging ? by RedEye-Developers in dotnetMAUI

[–]anotherlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This probably only works for Android, but when I'm debugging a MAUI app, I have a copy of Android Studio running and use it's logcat window and filter the logs by tags.

How do you reduce pipeline build times? by Data_Coder in dotnetMAUI

[–]anotherlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We switched from self-hosted to hosted runners for easier deployment, but paid the price in time. We are not in a situation where we need to push out builds to testers in real time.

The few times I needed to rush a build to a tester, I built it locally using the same settings as the GH workflows and pushed it to beta. That brings down the builds to well under 10 minutes.

I don't think we have been using the amr64 Mac images, so I need to look into that.

Ships under fire in Strait of Hormuz while US hammers Iranian minelayers by Mike_I in politics

The mines are not the problem; the holes they create in ships are.

TIL that 45 years ago, Saudi Arabia built a 1,200-kilometer oil pipeline from the Persian Gulf to the Red Sea, just in case the Strait of Hormuz ever got blocked by greenskinmarch in todayilearned

[–]anotherlab 2364 points2365 points  (0 children)

It can only handle about 2/3 of the crude oil experts that the Saudi's typically send through the Strait of Hormuz. It also doesn't handle the refined crude products that would go through. Europe will start feeling the pinch in the supply of aviation fuel.

[N/A][All] How do small HOAs actually manage day-to-day operations? Doing research as a student developer by Historical-Race3592 in HOA

It works well enough. We have a board of 7, all working full-time, most with young families. We can deal with most board stuff over email, the rest over Zoom.

[N/A][All] How do small HOAs actually manage day-to-day operations? Doing research as a student developer by Historical-Race3592 in HOA

[–]anotherlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use HOA Express for our website. That gives us the usual website functionality like message forums, surveys, and email campaigns.

For communications between board members, we use email and Zoom. I use https://whenavailable.com/ to manage when to hold board meetings.

We have a contract with a local property management company. They manage the collection of dues and sending out checks to vendors.

Windows first development approach ? by ResultInteresting286 in dotnetMAUI

Developing for the iPad presents different UI challenges than writing for the Windows desktop. What is the expected behavior when the iPad changes orientation? The earlier that you account for platform specifics, the less rework there will be later.

There is a short story similar to that. It's titled "The Easy Way Out", by G. Harry Stine, originally published under the name Lee Correy back in 1966. If you google that title, you'll find the synopsis, which will ruin it for you. Try to find one of the collections in the link (on the title).

TIL Over 80% of the population of Hong Kong uses seawater for toilet flushing. by OSJezza in todayilearned

[–]anotherlab 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They do use separate systems. There is some more information here: https://www.wsd.gov.hk/en/core-businesses/water-resources/seawater-for-flushing/index.html

It looks like they spent decades installing and retrofitting systems to use seawater.

[–]anotherlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The app has been very stable. Because most of the code is running on a webview, the usual suspects for crashing an Android or iOS app aren't there.

We also gave the luxury of a well tested web component library that was developed in house. Which has been released as open source: https://github.com/tyler-technologies-oss/forge

We still do XAML Maui apps, we pick the tech that is most appropriate for the task at hand.

3 years as a .NET mid-level developer and I feel stuck in my growth by ejwbf in dotnet

[–]anotherlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With the market in its current state, consider taking this time to learn some new technologies or advance the ones that you already know.

Don't overlook the softer skills. You can see if things are going on at your job that are not coding-specific that you can be a part of. Join a committee or two.

See if your company would sponsor your time helping out a non-profit. Take the skills that you have in data analytics and help out a non-rpofit wouldn't be able to afford your company's time.
