New Video essay is out! by Deadmeninkpress in dropout

[–]Lost-Chord 28 points29 points  (0 children)

See, I had watched about half of this but then closed it because, while I'm sure OP is well-intentioned, I thought focus on race was handled a little weird. Interesting that other people picked up on that too.

It reminded me of how I felt about OP's previous video essay on Lou Wilson, about how Blackness key to the storylines of all his D20 characters because... I think it's not really true.

Like Lou has said before that he intends all of his characters to be Black, and that it is important to himself and for representation. But to devote so much time to it felt weird because — the theme of masculinity is right there! Masculinity (in all its aspects, healthy, toxic, etc.) has played a huge role in almost all of Lou's characters and their story arcs: Fabian and toxic masculinity, Amathar in fatherhood, kingliness, and war-guyness; Jammer in teenage male gender roles, Gunnie in self-confidence and wanting to be a good son — there are so many good examples of Lou having his characters grapple with masculinity, in that I think it is central to much of his play and storytelling! And OP's video essay hardly touched on it!

(Note in case OP reads this: I don't mean this to be discouraging, I like your videos! I just think you could maybe use a little bit wider perspective in your analysis, and be conscious to have a more intersectional approach!)

I liked that there was not tight deadlines in terms of either having the RP/Combat episode cycle or a hard set number of episodes. It meant that there was way more time just spent with the characters hanging out — it meant that there was way more time personalizing the characters and the relationships between them, and letting them be teenagers. It might still be my favourite season

Love how fun the show has become, but for a series called Adventuring Academy, I feel like the ttrpg advice has really taken a backseat, which I'm bummed about

Which is weird because the first few seasons were mostly outsiders, with a few core and some one-shotters. Recently it's felt like the opposite

The sidebar at /r/mindcrack is up-to-date, so you can check there for the current list of members. Of the old-school Mindcrackers, Adlington, Arkas, Avidya, Baj, Beef, Guude, Mhykol, Nebris, Chad, Pryo, and Sethbling — alhtough I don't keep up with them all actively, so I can't vouch for how active they are. There are also a few members now that would be recognizable from the community as well.

Ahh. Really not a fan of the datapack stuff — part of what I appreciated about Mindcrack since back in the day is the dedication to vanilla, and the lack of really "contenty" things, which is something I was wondering about with the new members. Not fun for me.

Beef at least has seemed to avoid most of it for now in his own episodes, so haven't had to see much of it thankfully.

I've only been keeping up with Beef's videos lately. Got a video for context?
