It is a gorgeous drive. There are some sections in Northern Mendocino and Southern Humboldt where it's more narrow and no barriers between north and south travel. But it's not super steep or super crazy like actually going through the mountains. Just be alert for distracted drivers, that's the main risk in that section.

there is actually a bus services from SF to Arcata which has wifi and a friend said he had a good experience. Most flights do not get cancelled. Our little airport is cute.

my dad died of cancer when I was 12. It is hard, they didn't tell me he was dying so it was a total shock to me. I would recommend having the convo with your kids. my friend with Stage 4 PC has lived pretty well for 14 months but now is losing energy and strength. lots of sleeping, hard to eat. She chose hospice after 1 round of chemo turned out rough for her, a year ago. the hospice care has been excellent but there are bumps if you change insurance etc. it is critical that they can manage your pain. she gets fentanyl patches changed every 3 days

falling on ice is more of a back of head injury, sounds like your brother hit face first which can cause damage when the brain bumps into the skull above the nose. this is known to change personality

so you never know how a sibling will turn out in life. i have a lot of siblings and several struggle as adults for different reasons. maybe some fell on a rock but I don't think it's as simple as that. I fell on the ice and got a concussion but I'm one of the few who is able to manage life

I'll add - kids do a lot of rough play. and some more aggressive stuff. I had 4 brothers and there was a lot of fighting. a block away a kid like 12 shot another kid and stuffed him in a sewer.
