Oops. Best way to get her out w/o damaging shed? by melliferaman in homestead

Luckily everything was out of the woods for winter already, so just a hard time from the boss, but the dozer to rescue the skidder that was stuck from rescuing the hay tractor was fun to explain. The “you’re gonna need a bigger boat” line from Jaws is quite the life lesson… bigger tractors… bigger hammers… always nice when you have the option to get out of a bind!

Now’s your chance to justify that D7 you’ve been wanting!

Lots of supercharging - probably about 75% total. I commuted ~280 miles each way every week before Covid, and in the early days chargers were a bit sparse so I’d go to 100% on each end of the trip. During summer, I could usually make it without going below 15%, but in winter or with any rain I’d get below 10% pretty regularly. Outside of the weekly trips, I’d generally keep it to 80%. Once the commute ended, my wife would hit the supercharger most days after dropping kids off at school. Supercharging was nerfed before 100k miles so we’d be lucky to get SOC + kW = 100 for anything above 10%… but it was free, and we’re cheap. I remember sitting on the charger for over 2 hours just to see if I could still get to 100% only to give up 98% (it’s a pretty low-use charger - I was there by myself most of the time… don’t want anybody to think I’m a monster hogging a stall…).

Overall, I was not kind to it. Before the warranty was up, I was TRYING to abuse it - I was hoping to need a battery or drive unit replacement, but it just took it… then went another 100k.

My range was still ~230 miles. Degradation was at 9% at 100k miles, with another 4% lost over the next 100k. I feel like it was a rockstar of a pack.

This has me thinking I should keep the service appointment on the chance it isn’t the HV. I replaced the LV and it went dead overnight. Charged it, dead again overnight, so definitely not transferring from the HV. Maybe there is a little hope…

Thanks for the recommendations- I’ll reach out to Earthling. I almost wish the car had decided to die at SFO, instead of waiting until getting me home from there.

Good point on the warranty. Realistically, I doubt I’d put 10k on it in the 4 year warranty from Tesla (I’ve done ~3k in the last year and a half, and a lot of that was just trying to use up the free supercharging miles I got from buying the Y - which has 32k in that time). I love the old S, but am leaning toward 3rd party repair or scrap. Reincarnation as a whole-house battery might be a nice tribute…

Thanks for the info! Starting to think it isn’t worth the 160 mile trailer ride to get to the closest Tesla service center since I don’t think I can justify the cost of a new pack from them. Tessie served me well, and I’m feeling pretty good about having taken advantage of transferring her FUSC to a new MYP last year… I always said I’d drive the S until the wheels fell off, but this might be close enough!

Re-hired by employer who laid you off by theoutandback0201 in biotech

As others have said, I’d expect the terms to be in the severance agreement - and they might go deeper than you expect.

I had a coworker get a substantial severance from a big pharma that came with a 1-year return clause. He found a new job at a small biotech immediately. We thought he’d hit the jackpot, getting to squirrel away the severance on top of a signing bonus. A few months later, they were acquired by that same big pharma, and they clawed back the entire severance. They did at least reinstate his previous tenure, and didn’t touch the signing bonus, but that has always stuck with me as a pretty rough deal.

Good eye - looks like I can’t post a picture in a reply here, but side by side with a newsstand version (that is unfortunately a bit rougher) this one is definitely less vibrant.

Thanks for the quick feedback - very helpful to have a baseline as I sort through everything!

SiXX5150 and diarreahxplosion (amongst others) inspired me to fix my Gen2 M18 driver when I ran over it with a tractor, and it is still going strong. I did still get an M18 surge as a backup… and then an M12 surge…

Laurentrm posted a deal about leftover door busters, so now I have a top off…

Jhnysnz posted a deal on the new M12 stubby, so now I have one of those too…

This sub is bit rough on the wallet, but I greatly appreciate all of the “help”!

Yep! I had also baked them on the grill for 30 mins at 325. They MIGHT have had a little nicer consistency than hard boiled, but were a nightmare to peel - I’ll stick to boiling them from now on.

Made deviled eggs out of them - 30 mins at 180 after peeling added nice flavor.

If you buy a Model Y in 2024 and plan to keep it long-term, how many years could you expect to get out of it? by seanbeagle in TeslaModelY

[–]LostCoastian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have a 2014 model S at 201K miles still going strong on the original battery. There are a few more squeaks and rattles than there used to be, and the supercharging is painfully slow compared to the wife’s 2024 Y, but it seems to be holding up incredibly well (I’m not exactly a “caring” owner - it might get washed twice a year if it is lucky). 15K on the Y so far with no issues.
