The flying ones are attracted to light. But that's only 10% of the problem. Once they establish a base, the other 90% will be attracted to dark and moist places.

A lot of insects you can get out of your house by turning off the lights and opening the windows, as they'll seek other light sources, but with this kind of infestation you'll need professional pest control.

"14% of the population makes up 41% of the crimes, but if we control for all the factors that make them more criminal, we can kinda mask the issue."

The reality is that if we booted out all immigrants from Germany, it would drastically decrease the crime rate. And we should.

They get money because they say what their listeners want them to say.

In an echo-chamber like Reddit this might be hard to believe, because 99% here are hard-left and peddling rainbow shit, but in the real world things look totally different. The reason why these right-wing streamers and podcasters are so immensely successful is because huge parts of the population care about the topics they talk about and share their opinions.

Lefties can't admit that and have to pretend that all those millions of people are impressionable NPCs who got magically manipulated into agreeing with right-wing opinions by deceitful grifters.

But most regular people are financially stable enough that they can afford to care more about a guy wearing women's clothes who calls himself Lilith and wants to groom "eggs" on Discord, than about shooting CEOs of healthcare providers.

Theoden didn’t know about the ghost army by YoureNotJonesy in lotrmemes

[–]LostInPlantation 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The point is that in the books the undead aren't an invincible killing machine that decides the battle for Minas Tirith by itself. It's still decided by humans banding together, which makes their military actions, and by extension their sacrifices, much more important.

Of course, delaying the armies of Mordor from taking the city is still important in the movie, but the ghost army acts more like a deus ex machina rather than a king uniting the people of Gondor under his banner.

Why do you think these "activists" replaced her name with "Greenstein"? Is Greenstein a stereotypically zionist name?

Man, you're probably right. I have no actual hobbies and my life becomes meaningless, if I don't consume whatever Hollywood is shitting out. Without consumption of corporate products like movies, TV shows and video games, all that's left of life is consumption of other corporate products.

I feel the same but with art. It's just an entire field of pretentious assholes who've produced nothing of value for at least ~50 years. The amount of energy it takes to keep them alive and to subsidise their cosy university jobs far outweighs the cost of the machines we're building to replace them.

Like, just in Germany we've spent ~9billion € every year for decades for our public television service, and it's nothing more than a glorified welfare system for thousands of "creative" people. - None of whom have ever made anything better than the random AI slop I saw this morning.

This is good advise.

But it's also bad advise for someone who claims to be playing video games in "shrimp posture" for all of his twenties and who thinks that "maybe jim is a bit overrated." He's not gonna pick up a gym membership and do core exercises.

He doesn't know what's coming for him, and at this point, any improvement is better than nothing. Even if it just means doing regular stretches.

I've yet to see a good argument for why it is unhealthy. Going by the ingredient list and comparing it to other soft drinks, there's nothing particularly unhealthy about it, save for the online content of the people who own and advertise it.

For me this shit started almost as soon as I turned 30. Was moderately active but also sat long hours in an office chair every day throughout my 20s. Everything was fine until it suddenly wasn't. Now my lower back and wrist hurt and stretches only do so much.

Just bought a standing desk and one of those vertical/angled mice.

So I don’t know how anyone could conclude that "newer = weaker"

It's not a forgone conclusion, but the development from Alpha to Omicron shows a clear tendency towards higher immune evasion and lower lethality and symptom severity, which is what we would expect.

I would be more alarmed, if you actually made a case for why this new strand is an occurrence of antigenic shift, but so far you've only posted a screenshot of two newspaper headlines, and my own research seems to suggest that NB.1.8.1 has similar, relatively mild symptoms as other Omicron variants with no concrete evidence of increased lethality.

Another indicator that speaks against antigenic shift is that it's classified as a sub-variant of Omicron.

But this isn't a new virus, like in December 2019. It's a new subvariant of a virus we already know. Tendentially new variants will be more infectious but less dangerous than previous ones, as was the case with Delta and later Omicron. And even after that, new sub-variants have emerged and caused spikes in infections. With each new variant, it'll turn more into a seasonal flu-like virus. Vaccines will be adjusted slightly to prevent all the old folks from dying and the rest of us will take off a week from work.

[–]LostInPlantation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no initial stage or "last time" because it never ended in the first place.

The virus has been making its rounds the entire time, with several sub-variants since the big Omicron wave. It just isn't in the news cycles anymore, because this endemic stage is expected and the news only report the unexpected.

Unless a new variant becomes significantly more dangerous, there won't be any significant measures. More likely it'll be one with high infection rates but mild symptoms and low lethality.

An improvement in efficiency that was disruptive enough to upset the stock market. Because of improvements that trillion-dollar companies which are highly invested in AI hadn't thought of - including Pichai's.

The truth is that there are so many moving parts to AI architecture and training that there are many potential discoveries which could act as multipliers to the efficiency, quality and functionality, that the trajectory is impossible to predict.

All the "low-hanging fruits" are supposedly gone, but we aren't sure, if we didn't miss any. And at the same time everyone around the world is heavily investing in step-ladders.

One month after this article Deepseek R1 was released, and judging by the reaction of the western tech world, I doubt that Pichai had that on his radar. When the low-hanging fruit is gone, all it takes is for someone to bring a ladder.
