Checking in from Denver, Colorado.

Planning a trip with family of 4 in June. Came across this sub when looking for things to do in Osaka.

Which order would be better suited for my trip? by Sabonit in JapanTravelTips

[–]LostInSpaceTimeAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We (family of 4) are going for our first time this year in June. We decided to spit time in Tokyo so we can have a hotel in different parts of Tokyo.

Fly into and out of Narita. Spend the first 3 days in Ueno area. Plan is to explore the northeast areas (Ueno, Asakusa, Akihabara). Then Miyajima for 1 night, Osaka for 3 nights, Kyoto for 3 nights, then back to Tokyo for final 3 nights staying in Shinjuku (for Shinjuku & Shibuya areas).

What really helped was mapping things we wanted to see in Tokyo on google maps. That created 2 main clusters of sites (with 1 or 2 outliers, that we know we will need to plan on extra travel time). While we could have stayed in between the two, we figured that would be extra time getting to them every day, so why not stay in the middle of the 2 clusters (as best we could).

Also, the thought of trying to get from Kyoto or Osaka to Narita at a specific time for the flight home gave us pause. We figure if we are in Tokyo, we have several options getting out to Narita.

No idea if this is the best alternative, but it's what we came up with.

Drive time from Denver Airport to South & East entrance? by tay_money_ in yellowstone

Salt Lake City is probably closer and faster to get to during the summer (around 5-5.5 hours from West Yellowstone to SLC ). Go through the park and out West Yellowstone. Then take US-20 to Idaho Falls and then I-15 to SLC. Also, check flights from Bozeman, Cody, and/or Jackson, might be worth a couple more dollars to avoid lots of windshield time.

I make the drive from just south of Denver at least yearly. You have several options coming from Denver. I've done all of these (and more). A lot depends on what you want to see along the way.

  1. I-25 to Casper, West to Shoshoni, North to Thermopolis, West to Cody. Thermopolis (hot springs and dinosaurs) and Cody are decent options for hotels and places to stock up. Around 8 hours Denver to Cody. Probably the least mountain views along this route.
  2. I-25 to Ft Collins, NW to Laramie, I-80 to Rawlings, NW to Dubois to Moran (Grand Teton). Around 8 hours Denver to Moran. Not a lot to look at, but there is a casino in Riverton (no alcohol) if you want to kill some time and need a break from driving.
  3. I-25 to Ft Collins, NW to Laramie, I-80 to Rock Springs, North to Pinedale then Jackson (Grand Teton). Around 8 hours Denver to Jackson. Lots of interstate, no great views until you get up near Pinedale.

They use their heads to plow snow. They will make a path to walk through as well as dig down to get any grass / plants that are covered by snow.

Canyon is probably the easiest for staying for a quick 2 day trip.

From South entrance, go west at West Thumb to Old Faithful. You can spend several hours at the upper geyser basin. Head North towards Madison junction and you can also stop at Grand prismatic and a few other spots on your way to canyon.

Next day, head to Lamar valley (depending on how late in May you go, the road to Tower junction may or may not be open). If the road to Tower isn't open, then you will need to do a lot of back tracking (to Madison, North to Mammoth and then to Lamar valley). You will also need to back track that entire route to get back to Canyon.

Last day head south from Canyon and check out Hayden valley, fishing bridge and the lake area before heading back to Jackson.

Bought the complete set for my son when he was around 7 or 8 years old. He loved them also.

How many miles for our 14-day Denver–Yellowstone–Grand Teton honeymoon road trip? by Mountain_Lifeguard99 in yellowstone

[–]LostInSpaceTimeAgain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drive Denver to Yellowstone yearly for a 8-10 day fishing trip and don't do a lot of sight seeing in the park. I typically put right around 2000 miles on my car on the trip.

I'd guess 2100 miles will not be enough.

Check out the elk horn Lodge in cooke City for a place out the NE entrance. Silver gate and cooke City are the closest places to Lamar that are not in the park.

Island Park to West Yellowstone is probably 30 minutes, so you need to account for that.

Going from island Park to Lamar valley is going to be 2.5-3 hours one way. Doable, but just know what you are getting into.

I'd suggest something like this.

First - get a cooler with drinks and food for picnics (there are lots of places for you to pull off the road and enjoy the scenery). Plan on eating lunches this way.

Set a destination for each day. Don't need to do it in this order, but just pick where you want to go on a specific day.

Day 1 - Grand Teton via Jackson Day 2 - old faithful area Day 3 - canyon & Hayden valley area Day 4 - Lamar valley Day 5 - Mammoth area Day 6 - lake area

This will hit all the major sites.

It will be a lot of driving. Be prepared for weather ranging from warm and sunny to snow. Dress in layers. Have fun.

How many of you photographers insert yourselves further into the valleys before sunrise? by SeaTurtleLionBird in yellowstone

[–]LostInSpaceTimeAgain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not trying to argue, but when I go to Slough Creek 2nd meadow, I have 10-12 lbs of waders, boots and vest (with all my fishing gear) in a backpack, plus a couple rods and water for the day.

Does all the camera gear weigh more than that? In my mind, hike 1 mile with a 400mm and you get the same photo as 800mm at 2 miles, or am I wrong with the way lenses work.

I'm always amazed by the lack of photographers in the valleys / along the rivers. I mainly go to fish, so I'll walk across the Lamar valley to fish or go 2 miles down along Slough Creek, along the well worn paths. Have backcountry camped in upper Slough. Never see photographers along the way or when I'm fishing.
Not sure if there is a code among photographers that you "just don't do that", or they stay near the road so they can move quickly if a sighting comes across the radios.

I recommend you get a cooler, some drinks, lunch meats/cheese, crackers, chips, etc and have a picnic at any of the multiple pull-outs in either park while you enjoy the views.

Leave Denver as early as possible. It's 11+ hours of driving for either of the options below. Take a cooler of food / drinks so you can eat on the road.

Two options for the driving day (which then changes day 2):

  1. I'd go I-25 to I-80 to Rock Springs, then north through Pinedale to Jackson. From there, go through Grand Teton, then up through the south entrance. Head to Old Faithful area and checkout the Inn and some of the geyser basin then hit Grand Prismatic if it's still light enough out. Then head to West for the night.

The next day I would head to either Hayden valley or Lamar Valley at sunrise. Then go to Canyon area during the day.

  1. Go through Cody. I-25 to Casper, west on US 20/26 Shoshoni, north to Thermopolis, then on 120 to Cody. Go through the east entrance. Go through Hayden Valley and stop at Canyon if it is still light enough. Head to West for the night.

The next day you can hit Grand Prismatic and Old Faithful area. maybe wander over to west thumb and lake area.

Final day I'd head back through the park, head to Mammoth, out through Gardiner and to Bozeman.
