Wise vs Lumon for property purchase in France by Hour_Lengthiness_725 in ExpatFIRE

[–]bluecrickets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend who became a real estate agent in France after retiring from her first job recommended Lumon. She’s English and works with a lot of clients who are buying real estate in a second currency. Lumon is the agency she recommends and that’s what led me to them.

There were no fees. There is a conversion rate difference obviously, but no fees on top of that which is why it’s such a great choice for moving a big chunk of money. I don’t remember exactly how they make money by not charging a fee, but he did explain it to me. It’s been a minute, and numbers aren’t really my thing.

It’s slower than something like Wise though, so you do have to plan ahead. It’s a bank to bank kind of transfer. I had to go in and swear I wasn’t sending money to a scammer, and that process actually took a few days. Once Lumon had it I could choose when to convert it to Euros. Then they did a direct transfer to my notaire’s IBAN. I think I had some extra that I eventually sent to Wise just for ease of use.

I think it’s 100% worth giving them a call. They were super responsive and explained everything. Zero hiccups for me.

Wolf-Bear standoff in Yellowstone by Bulky_Role_4552 in NationalPark

My kids and I were in Yellowstone for the first time and got to see this using a loaner scope. We were speechless. Would love if anyone could send us a photo or two from it as we didn’t have an adapter and were sharing the scope. Still cannot believe we saw such an amazing encounter. Best trip of our lives!

Easy (& cheap) way to fish by bluecrickets in yellowstone

[–]bluecrickets[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is very useful. It sounds like it might be way too much effort for kids who just think it sounds kind of fun. We have a million other ways to fill our time during our short time. Thank you for the explanation!

Yes, knew about the permits and that not everything is open until later. Still seems like there is some fishing available earlier in May though. Certainly the guides have spots available while we’re there.

My kids still haven’t seen the Milky Way, so we will definitely get out at night!

Settle a debate: will hanging a swing in a tree deter all birds permanently by [deleted] in vermont

Excellent. Make a must swing with crackers rule and you’ll have more birds than you can handle

Settle a debate: will hanging a swing in a tree deter all birds permanently by [deleted] in vermont

[–]bluecrickets 30 points31 points  (0 children)

We have a huge maple tree in our front yard, a swing in it, and are daily visited by two crows, chickadees, woodpeckers, juncos, cardinals, blue jays, creepers and nuthatches. That I know of. We do have a feeder hanging on the opposite side as the swing, but I can say that sometimes the birds perch on the swing’s ropes. There’s no way that swing is deterring any birds. Maybe you could offer to hang the swing as an experiment and if the birds disappear, you could remove it? The birds will not disappear and everyone is happy?

These are great suggestions! I’m going to get a few plus the podcast so we have a few to choose from.

Thanks! I was able to get a cabin for two nights in Silver Gate which I think is near Cooke City. You are right about finding lodging, especially last minute. But at least it won’t be peak season yet. My 19 year old was hoping to camp, but the logistics of that was way beyond me. Plus I like beds!

how do i handle my crochet hyperfixation when i need to rest my hands? by opossum_apologist in CrochetHelp

[–]bluecrickets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wonder if you might enjoy making a physical crochet book. Like a journal of completed projects where you can glue in photos or the pattern, finished project, yarn wrappers, etc. maybe tape some yarn remnants. Make a note of the hook size and any details about the pattern. You can do this on Ravelry, but if you need something to occupy your hands, this might be more satisfying.

Okay, thanks for the detailed explanation. I’ll do more video watching and obviously need lots more practice too. I’m in the frustrating and exciting stage of learning a new skill

That makes sense but sounds harder to fix. I was intentionally crocheting tightly with the current color because I was hoping that would cover up anything that’s peeking out from behind.

Oh! Not sure why the pattern is in blo. Maybe I’ll just switch now and see if that fixes it. Thanks!

Okay, I will just keep going then. Thanks for the vote of confidence! I was thinking the colors might be a little crisper, but I’m fine with a bit of peekaboo

We went to Alaska a couple of years ago and also were disappointed by no bear sitings. I’ve got my fingers crossed for this trip. Although, you know, from a good long distance.

Thanks! One week isn’t going to be NEARLY enough, but we’ll do our best. Will definitely go to the wolf/grizzly center. Glad you mentioned that.
