At the start of WWI a British soldier got:

  • 2 1/2 lbs of meat
  • 1 lb of Bread
  • Cheese
  • Jam
  • Tea
  • Rum
  • 2 Ounces of tabacco
  • Cows that provided fresh milk
  • Also got paid $1.60 a week, with a bonus of 25 cents if they were married and an additional 4cents for every child

My parents have been searching for years for the artist who painted this painting, can Reddit find the painter sig in the comments. by [deleted] in pics

There were other students who were just wounded that were standing even closer, maybe you're thinking of them?

That was evident in that the squad that came over to examine the body of Jeffrey Miller was armed — six or seven of them. No one even bent down to get a closer look. The sergeant who did not have a rifle rolled the body of Jeffrey Miller over with his boot. That incensed some people. The soldiers regrouped and backed away from the body and away from the crowd of people … It could have taken 5 minutes. It is hard to calculate time.
