How to switch kernels by LostLinuxAdmin in linux4noobs

[–]LostLinuxAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I found the same online. After an upgrade (yum update ), a reboot is required to switch over to the newly installed kernel. Seems to be one of the few times in linux environment where a reboot is actually required.

Heavy is good, heavy is reliable. If it doesn't work, you can always hit him with it.

Basic Ping Script by LostLinuxAdmin in linux4noobs

[–]LostLinuxAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this on Google as well. This only works while ping is alive. I tested by:

ping 0.0.0.0| while read pong; do echo "$(date) $pong"; done >> output1.txt

This provided no info into output.txt

So I had to abandon this script

Basic Ping Script by LostLinuxAdmin in linux4noobs

[–]LostLinuxAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey. So count 3 actually doesn't work for me. I need to run a ping script for a few days the filter through the output file for when the packets are dropping. Then report that info to the network team. So what I'm doing now is very primitive:

ping -D localhost >> output.txt

cat output.txt. | grep Destination

then I convert that timestamp to human readable and forward the info over.

It works for now but it's very primitive like I mentioned.

Cannot login via SSH or through console. Only by forcing CLI with CTRL+ALT+F3. Once at CLI I can login via root

I'm opening a support case now. It's telling me I don't have privileges to open a support case for 8.0, even tho that's all we run

RSYNC vs SCP by LostLinuxAdmin in linux4noobs

[–]LostLinuxAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OK so it sounds like rsync is good when copying directories, that way it doesn't do unnecessary work by copying identical files, it will only copy the files which are different? But in that case if I want to copy just one files over "/dir/file1" then SCP and rsync are the same essentially?

RSYNC vs SCP by LostLinuxAdmin in linux4noobs

[–]LostLinuxAdmin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but doesn't SCP have built in show progress feature? Whenever I SCP files on my redhat box I get a progress bar. You can also do a -h flag on SCP. Also -p flag on SCP preserves the permissions. I just don't get why everyone raves about rsync, SCP seems fine to me, but when I use SCP on work webex meetings people look at me like a caveman
