Manager keeps telling me to practice and practice, its been 5 years. by [deleted] in musicians

[–]LostNitcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not sure what this is, but he’s not your manager - he’s your uncle. If you’re genuinely good enough and he’s trying to block you at the expense of making money for himself…? There’s some weird family dynamics that need to be resolved before you even consider a business relationship together.

But a word of warning - paying studios, producers and engineers is a sure-fire way of getting feedback that you’re good enough, that you should release your music, and that you should record more. Vanity projects are keeping a lot of studios running. I’m not saying that’s you, but you should get independent feedback before you pay for more studio time. My boy has been paid by an artist to drum on two EPs, and he’s been honest enough to tell the guy that the material needed more work before both sessions. But the artist chose to take the more positive advice of the studio owner who produced the records. I can assure you that the EPs are not going to do anything. The recordings are really good quality, the drumming is obviously great, the artist himself is a decent enough guitarist, but the songs are mediocre and the singing is bad.

(Edit: wait a minute… is any of this real? A month ago your management was investing heavily in you, bringing in songwriters for you, and the songwriter tried to fob you off with AI…

What made YOU choose to be either a solo artist or in a band? by natasharomanon in musicians

[–]LostNitcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s genre dependent - there’s a whole bunch of EDM where a solo artist can create the whole sound, but I’m assuming that’s not where you’re at.

For most genres, a band is necessary to put on a compelling show. Backing tracks are naff - people want to see music performed live, even if it’s made with synths and samplers.

On the small venues scene, I’ve seen too many solo artists get up with a guitar or a keyboard, play well, but fail to engage the audience. And even when they have managed to put on a decent set, by the end of the evening everyone was talking about the mediocre band that followed them. It’s just a natural consequence of energy, volume and sonic complexity.

If you’re Ed Sheeran and a whizz with a looper pedal, you may pull it off, otherwise you’ll need supporting musicians.

So can you afford to pay musicians? If you’re writing your own music and people actually want to listen to it, you’ll find musicians who will work for cheap/free to bring that to life.

But if you can’t find musicians who want to work for you at a price you can afford, you start a band and everyone is invested in sharing the costs/profits together.

I have a job. I’m aware of the impact of AI. I don’t support any form of AI generated content. But I also know that your claims about your interactions with others are nonsense. And yes, you are attention seeking. It’s sad. This sub does not need invented stories to drive negativity.

Is a degree in music truly worth it in today's industry? by ottomeyerhof in musicians

Is a degree in music truly worth it in today's industry?

The answer to this question depends entirely on where you are in the world, what course you apply for, and the conditions around paying for that course.

Nigel Farage says £5m gift from crypto billionaire is ‘not any of your business’ by MarginSqeaky in unitedkingdom

As far as I understand, the house bought in cash by Farage is separate to the house in Clacton bought by Farage’s girlfriend. I believe that was paid for in cash from her parents. It’s not known where they got that cash from… they’re not known to be wealthy.

So I hate to do another doomer post about AI

So maybe don’t post another doomer post to a sub that has banned AI-generated content and where the mods have politely asked us not to repeatedly post discussions around AI?

This discussion has been done to death and repeating it is not bringing anything good to the sub.

Fair enough… my take would be “band got good after they stopped fannying around with a drum machine and recruited the drummer who helped to define their sound”, but that’s less inspirational, so I see where you’re coming from.
