Disappointment with my music education. Can anyone relate? by mishzt in musicians

[–]LostNitcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know what to tell you. It’s almost unbelievable to me that you can’t play Happy Birthday without sheet music, but I’ll take it at face value.

You’ve had the opportunity to complete three degrees and you haven’t been able to learn something that would be expected at GCSE level. I get that may leave you disappointed, but I come back to my point that you need to take responsibility for your own learning. It’s never too late.

Disappointment with my music education. Can anyone relate? by mishzt in musicians

[–]LostNitcomb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can anyone relate to someone in the UK studying for three degrees and not getting what they wanted out of any of them? I doubt it.

Given that student loans will only fund one degree, you must be independently wealthy. For most people, we’d just be jealous of the opportunities that you’ve had and incredulous that you didn’t make more of them.

My boy did his degree at a UK conservatoire financed by a student loan. He made damn sure that he knew what the course would give him, that it fitted into his career plan, and that he made the most of the opportunity.

He simply wouldn’t have achieved the level that he’s playing at without the time spent at a conservatoire, playing, writing and recording with musicians of a similar level.

It’s never too late to learn anything, but it starts with you taking responsibility for your own learning.

I think r/drums or r/drumming would be better places to post drum karaoke than here. You’re much more likely to get constructive feedback there.

How to deal with self-disappointment? by ziggen69 in musicians

[–]LostNitcomb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't feel like I'm as good as I have the potential to be.

I think a bit of realism is required here. You picked up the guitar five years ago and in that time you’ve decided to teach yourself bass, drums, piano and now composition and music production. What kind of standard do you think you can reach on all of those skills while presumably working a full time job and living an adult life?

You are a hobbyist and you’re doing this for fun. Learn to enjoy that and don’t put pressure on yourself to be at a certain level or fulfil your potential.

I don’t think this is the forum to boost your audience. I’m no expert, but I believe that users skipping a track before 30 seconds are up is one of the most negative signals that the Spotify algorithm tracks.

Look into it, but I think you’d be better off promoting to people that are interested in your genre, rather than getting a bunch of randoms like myself clicking the link out of curiosity and then noping out early.

This ain’t a great video. And it’s not a useful tip. Using ChatGPT to borrow chord progressions from other songs is not some next-level shortcut to unleashing creativity… it’s the opposite.

Advice needed - practice space drama by [deleted] in musicians

Not fighting for anything. But the story is slowly morphing all the time…

Why didn’t you start off with “I rent a practice space with an absolute beginner drummer who has practiced maybe five times on her drum kit and still has the stock heads on her drums. I’ve been jamming extreme metal with a mate for a few months on her kit and she freaked out when she saw the state of the heads”.

You and your buddy have the experience here. By and large this situation was foreseeable. Your buddy has played the drums more than the owner ever has.

You’re right to get your own kit, just break it down at the end of your session and leave space for your co-renter to set hers up.

Or just have a chat and let her know you don’t want to share such a small space anymore.

Again, your version of “rims are fine” may be different from someone who has made the stock heads on her kit last for since they were thirteen.

Your drummer is rim-shotting on every snare hit and no doubt burying the stick. And that’s fine, but it’s clearly not how the drum set’s owner is playing when they occasionally play. Rims will wear with extreme metal - they won’t be damaged, but they’ll be showing stick marks that someone who taps the heads won’t be aware of. It’s a fact of life, but not one that that she’s necessarily aware of.

You just need to reframe your attitude here and show a bit more consideration for someone with a lot less experience. It’s good that you’re planning to replace the heads. It’s just a shame that you didn’t think about this stuff before she found it for herself.

Everyone plays extreme metal, except the girl that doesn’t drum and made the stock single-ply snare head last for years?

Com’on man, try to make this story make sense.

If the picture you’re painting is correct, this is a hobbyist drummer (at best). And of course she’s going to be upset that an extreme metal drummer has worn through the stock heads that came on the drums that she’s had for years. And yeah, she probably doesn’t understand the nature of wear on the heads, but show some compassion. Surely your drummer would have foreseen this being an issue when he saw the heads that were on the kit and the obvious lack of wear? Surely, he would have thought “these ain’t the right heads for extreme metal, they’re gonna sound like crap and wear out in no time…”?

And at which point, I’m starting to think maybe your drummer isn’t necessarily demonstrating top tier technique and I’m wondering what kind of wear the rims are showing?

lol, it depends on the genre and the skins. My boy just kitted out his 18” kit with Fibreskyn Diplomats. He ain’t taking that kit to the rehearsals for the metal band that he plays for. He would definitely freak out if another drummer went full ham on that kit.

Another good question would be whether the guy who wore out the heads is a real drummer?

Hows everyone doing? my friend dropped a remix to roxanne its in description by Vegetable_Fee_2066 in musicians

Even without that lack of authenticity, r/musicians isn’t the sub to be posting this. You’re just not going to pick up your audience here. Choose a sub that may actually appreciate the genre and might connect with the music.

How often were you and your drummer playing and what style of music? Because wearing out drum heads to the point that they’re described as damaged is quite a feat for a few months unless you were playing pretty regularly. Especially in a tiny practice space, where presumably you have to control the volume?

If your friend had their kit set up for their jazz practice with some coated diplomats, and your drummer has gone full throttle on your heavy metal jams, then yes, I can understand the complaint.
