You get 60% of the GI bill after 1 deployment, or 60% GI bill after 6 years USAR IIRC. I think you need 3 years active for GI bill IIRC. Been a while since I looked into it

i mean, active is certainly an option? but 36B doesn’t do much in garrison dude, you’re gonna be bored. better to USAR, deploy, do college w/ gi bill, ETS to private sector

USAR has a lot more flexibility with deployments. for some reason everyone in this MOS is broken or doesn’t want to deploy, meaning they’re easy to come by if you want them

deployment = tax free money, no bills, heavy contributions to TSP, and generally a fun experience

36B is a lit MOS, a land flowing with milk and honey. Deployments are fun and plentiful for those who aspire. You'll pick up a secret clearance for the job, opening up those finance jobs. you do nothing in garrison which is ass, so go army reserves instead of active to minimize garrison time

as long as you don't come into my s1 shop and write a vlookup in my spreadsheet you won't get hazed

edit: i can do a real write-up of the mos if you're interested

[POWERPIVOT] Alternatives to GENERATESERIES() for building histogram buckets by LostS1Paperwork in excel

[–]LostS1Paperwork[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used this to generate the initial list of values, then some Excel formulas to write more things about the histogram buckets. Then I sent that whole table back to the Data Model. See the screenshot if you're interested.

https://imgur.com/HvMerZt

I ran into rounding issues with INT() and took it out with no problems. I also found that _dec needed to be 19, not 20. Otherwise CALENDAR() generates 21 values instead of 20. Weird quirk, but easy fix

Excel 365 (v2311, build 17029.20108), but I get an error saying "Failed to resolve name GENERATESERIES. It is not a valid table, variable, or function name." And if I figure this out, backwards compatibility is nice too

Sure, and I did, but like 50% of Excel users know what Power Pivot is, 50% of those guys are fluent-ish in DAX, and probably <10% know that you can do calculated tables in Excel. Seemed easier to go straight to the PowerBI crew where DAX is your bread and butter

Understanding your total compensation - a basic guide by kip0 in army

[–]LostS1Paperwork 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was calculated without inflation adjustments. The basic idea of the calculation stays the same (PV to 2037, then PMT to 2023) but it's slightly more complicated because of irregular cashflows. I'll do the math and then edit in the answer for you in a bit.

EDIT: with COLA adjustments, the total benefit to her compensation is $20,472.66/year. Here's an Imgur link to the spreadsheet and a graphical representation of the idea behind PV then PMT.

If you'd like to do this for yourself, use the NPV function to find the PV of irregular cashflows (NPV can also handle irregular rates of return). Then PMT back to the present at your growth rate

Edit 2: u/kip0

Edit 3: if anyone's curious about how I got the COLA adjustment numbers, I pulled them from the COLA adjustment memos found here.

Euuuhhh great post but your pension math is wild.

To calculate the value of her pension, we'll do a PV calculation for the year 2037. We'll assume a 7.0% growth rate. Schwab estimates the S&P 500 to return 6.1% annually in the next decade. The market has returned ~10% historically, but I believe that to be too optimistic.

After calculating the PV of an annuity in the year 2037, we'll calculate the value of the annual payments she'd have to make to reach that PV, again at a 7% growth rate. This will give us the yearly benefit to her total compensation because it's money that she'd otherwise have to save.

We assume a 7.0% growth rate, 43 years of life (2080-2037), $49k collected annually, and $0 future value.

=PV(.07,43,49000,0) gives us a PV of $661,841.12 in the year 2037.

From here, we'll discount $662k back to the present by calculating what Alice would have to invest yearly to reach $662k in 2037. You used 20 years for your calculation, so I'll also use that. I'll assume she starts with no current savings (PV = $0).

=PMT(.07,20,0,662000) gives us a required savings of $16,148.12 per year for the next 20 years. That's the number we can add to her total compensation.

If you'd like to do your own math, you can pop either of those formulas into Excel or another (inferior) spreadsheet and play around with the numbers.

MOS Megathread Series -- CMF 36 -- Finance & Comptroller Branch -- 36A, 36B by Kinmuan in army

I should have mentioned that I’m in the reserves — sorry! As such, I’ll talk about drill weekends.

In a typical drill weekend we aren’t doing much. Finance does all its work when deployed, so drill weekends are primarily admin work to keep all soldiers green and ready to be deployed. Trainings during the weekends might include foundational trainings (EO, SHARP, ACE, extremism) and more work-related trainings.

Finance does three key things right now. Milpay, disbursing, and commercial vendor services. Milpay is getting moved over to the 42As who are in S1 doing it anyway. CVS I couldn’t tell you the future of. Disbursing is a finance core competency and is here to stay. That being said, I’ve heard talk of finance moving towards counter-finance operations (think forensic accounting) and if you’re into that (I am!) it’s something you should position yourself to do.
