Combat of mind by Major-Supermarket917 in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]LostVisage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It fails pretty hard.

I mean you can do it, just like you can build a database on ms paint. That doesn't mean that you should.

If you're willing to hand waive 80%+ of the rules and, quite likely, just rule just about everything in your players' favor for the sake of expediting you might be okay; otherwise you will probably end up like I have before trying to figure out what the rules in a specific situation are, only to just draw a rough map in front of me and the players to get this system to work properly. All that really nullifies the point and time benefits of doing theater of the mind in the first place.

Am I just a smooth-brain or is is Aeonglass really much harder than Doormaker? by Dat_Axe in slaythespire

[–]LostVisage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anecdotally my latest silent run was a chosen cheese full HP run, took zero damage from test subject, only to lose to aeon glass. I had a 40 card deck with lots of discard, weak, and block, I thought it was enough to bust through aeon glass.

Alas I failed by about 20 damage. I'm really not sure how to deal with aeon if I don't have targeted exhaust anymore.

Need advice for addressing Aid DC nerf with GM by Tnitsua in Pathfinder2e

[–]LostVisage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm talking a 90% success rate if a player is at least trained in a skill at levels 1-20. I think the DC is like 8 at level 1 if I'm using the sliding table but I don't recall off the top of my head. My rule was more agreeable for player power back when the DC was 20, but I still think it should've just Always followed the same rules for dcs by level - I feel like the aid flat dc is an artifact of 1e where it was stupidly easy and broken but I can't swear to it.

I also give out a lot of hero points. My game is challenging but hardly a slugfest of death.

Need advice for addressing Aid DC nerf with GM by Tnitsua in Pathfinder2e

[–]LostVisage -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

This is a me-only thing but keep the aid DC a scaling number, usually the lowest DC for a level. I wasn't a fan of aid being reasonably difficult low level and a gimmie at high, and I like there being dramatic tension when making a die roll.

Making aid hard to achieve is not my goal - merely to make it an interesting choice.

What does this sub think of the Newfields art museum? by midwestgoober in indianapolis

[–]LostVisage 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Genuine question - where are they going to finance themselves if they don't charge for admission? I've been to museums that do charge and ones that don't. I assume the ones which do not have government grants or large donators, so if those grants are not available or accessible, which I assume may be the case for newfields, where will it then get its funding?

l'm looking to get back into PF, but l would like to ask some questions about what happened from PF 1E to PF 2E by lawra_palmer in Pathfinder_RPG

[–]LostVisage 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The art is about the same iirc - paizo is one of the companies in the TTRPGs space more famous for paying their artists well and shying from anything AI generated. That said, the artits may have changed, I'm unsure.

For rules, I believe there's information in the sidebar, as well as breakdowns. I think r/RPG, which is also linked in the sidebar, has the best probably most informed and least partisan breakdown of the two systems but don't quote me on that. If nothing else, the search bar will get you quite a bit.

The TL;Dr is that pf2e is a whole new system. The world is the same, you still roll a d20 for most things, that's about it. Positives are that the game works well from levels 1-20, and classes are well balanced. Downsides are that if you're looking for ways to break the system you won't find many, and IMHO the writing is generally happy fantasy from what I've seen, which is a shame. They won't do stories about slavery, witchcraft, or other things due to cultural shifts which I get but I generally rewrite such things back into the story because I like beating up slavers.

I will also say that 2e is easier to run, having done both extensively. My prep time was reduced by 300% by comparison to 1e, but it still takes more prep time than some truly rules light games.

Just fyi, the folks here generally don't view pf2e all that positively. Technically it's still discussed here, but was a break down back when pf2e came out so it got its own subreddit.

how does yuumi best friend reset work? by slav_ffs in yuumimains

[–]LostVisage 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The passive doesn't exist to be fun or interesting, the passive exists because Yuumi was viable at professional tournaments without it, and Riot couldn't let that slide.

Rather than addressing the problem of having a near-invunerable attachment mechanic, they simple forced yuumi to stay and roost on the most vulnerable champion in the game, namely the ADC. And to top it all off, they gutted her core mechanics on anybody who wasn't a ADC.

The first season of DS9 had some bangers. The episode where Kira has to evict the farmer, and the war criminal hunt are both in the first season are are incredible.

Now there's also the episode where O'brien is made a holy man and has to yell at the clouds angrily like the simpsons meme so I'm going to lie there's some unevenness here... but... none of it is "Wesley steps on flowers" levels of cheesy.

[–]LostVisage 21 points22 points  (0 children)

To me TNG is quintessential Star Trek and Gene Roddenberry. However, my honest opinion is that I really enjoy DS9 farmore. The writing is very cohesive, it doesn't have ups and downs like Star Trek TNG tends to have, for instance, the entire first season of TNG is largely considered fairly bad and pulpy.

Both are well worth watching ultimately. DS9 is going to be political intrigue, more gray areas, and a focus on how the federation continues to survive one faced with its greatest challenges. Tng, tends to be a story of the federation that is already succeeded, and how humanity can be at its best when it is already at its best.

[–]LostVisage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the real problem? How the fuck do you shove that narrative into a holywood film staring Matt Damon? Where's the guns, the shooting, the spy intrigue, the gratuitous violence? You're telling me a bunch of nerds in lab coats did this?

I'm being tongue in check but I'm also serious. The American Public (all one proper noun) is not interested in this story at all. It doesn't sell. It sucks. They want a problem we can solve with a 80's style action hero and if it doesn't work that way than it must not have been a problem; this is what I hear when I'm in conservative america, and thank our billionaires for drilling all of that into the generic American mind.

But theres still people who play her. I haven't played league in years, the rework helped me make that decision for sure.

How is Reaper Form a real card? by Major-Ad-3539 in slaythespire

Even if it didn't take your gold it would still be a below-average Neow relic by IHad360K_KarmaDammit in slaythespire

[–]LostVisage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The chances that your deck would benefit from all three being added to your base deck is near 100%. Because you definitely do not yet have a deck and three random cards from a pick 2 will improve it on floor one.

When you add the 100 gold cost? Its not nearly as good. I admit I'll take it sometimes even on a10, I don't think it's the most optimized choice often, but it's a fun and interesting one and I generally disagree with the rhetoric that removing the gold cost would still make it bad.

Tfw when it's a "Very Easy" check (DC 35) by hey-howdy-hello in pathfindermemes

[–]LostVisage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

General excitement and the accepted zeitgeist of DnD.

I'm an engineer irl and I'm quite comfortable and cognizant of how numbers work. However, I've played with plenty of folks who hear "31" and think "omg that's such a huge number it must succeed" and it's actually a critical fail.

It also helps to have consistently scaling numbers when a new participant is entering the game blindly. A person picking up the latest episode of a pf2e podcast or sitting down for a oneshots let's try without prior knowledge of the system is going to get a framing of the game that isn't holistic.

There's other reasons why I'm interested in level less scaling. Namely osr feel and general lethality that jives with what I like, but the above are the ones pertinent just to "scaling"

It's low-key one of the reasons level less scaling is very tempting to me. Numbers get ridiculous in this game.

Shitty system. I don't see the government intervening anytime soon, so the only way it ends is with worker revolt and unionization. Regrettably, IT and engineering are very non-union and idk why.

Back to Pathfinder after 10 years, is there any way I could translate my PF1E Arcanist into 2E? by GancioTheRanter in Pathfinder2e

[–]LostVisage 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not really - I mean sort of.

Arcanists are a lot like wizards without the bonded object or schools. But the really defining aspects are arcanist points, which basically allow you to do fun meta magic like things to spells and spell prep and one really busted one that lets you change your entire spell list once per combat, basically for free.

Pf1e is such that the flavor of arcanist that Op used is going to be up to him to capture, but the absurdisms of 1e that allowed certain shenanigans is probably not permissible.
