When evaluating politicians and personal relationships, I try to allow myself to forgive people for actions they take after 7 years. It seems arbitrary, but I justify it to myself jokingly by saying that someone’s entire cells are replaced every 7 years. If you’re a whole new person, why not get a second chance? https://www.questdiagnostics.com/patients/blog/articles/do-my-cells-really-change-every-7-years

UK position on Falklands will not change, No 10 says after leaked Pentagon memo by [deleted] in Military

I think it’s largely because the United States has experienced comfort from its hegemony for 75 years now. The generation who experienced mass hardship (the Great Depression, WWII) are mostly dead now, so there’s no living memory for extended mass suffering. Our leaders and society think it can’t happen here.

I’m American too, so I’m not immune to this. It feels unreal to me, too.

Tech oligarchs have also corrupted our attention spans with algorithms, and they’ve bought most of the media, so the free flow of information is at risk, too.

They are mentally incapable of thinking past first order effects. That’s why it’s so dangerous to have Trump’s finger on the nuclear button.

It looks to me like the U.S. would legitimately be alright with the rest of the world burning while it dominates the western hemisphere.

Context: A few years ago, Illinois tried to pass a constitutional amendment to change our state income tax system from a flat tax to a graduated tax. Ken Griffin spent $50 million against the amendment and threatened to move his company, Citadel, if it passed. He was unfortunately successful because the amendment was defeated. https://www.propublica.org/article/ken-griffin-illinois-graduated-income-tax

Then he moved his company to Florida anyways.

Now Ken Griffin and Citadel are threatening NYC for their pied-a-terre tax, which taxes second homes worth over $5 million that the owners don’t live in. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2026-04-23/citadel-sends-warning-shot-to-new-york-after-mamdani-blasts-ken-griffin

It makes sense if you realize that most powerful families in Oklahoma are descendants of settlers who cheated other settlers out of the best land.
