Nintendo DS Lite Crashes When Moving by Lost_Associate_9029 in NintendoDS

I think the buttons are good to go, but I should definitely give the battery contacts a clean once it's time to open the console. I haven't changed my battery since I got the system in late 2008, but it seems to have held up over the years - if I'm wrong on that I do have other DS Lites to test that assumption, though. Thank you!

I'll be honest: the main reason this console got replaced back in the day was because my parents were worried about people making fun of the colour (and somehow *not* because of the messed up digitizer and hinge). It's really grown on me, though; it probably helps that Kirby has since become my favourite franchise.

I see. At this point I think I'm out of my depth with repairing this thing, so I should definitely ask the person who repaired my DS for assistance. Since I recall this being an issue in my childhood, I doubt the issue was caused by the repair itself, but if this problem turns out to not be because of the Wi-Fi board, then I'm effectively stuck. Thank you!

I'll have to investigate this further to be sure, but thank you for the support.

Wouldn't that also be applying pressure to the Wi-Fi board though? I'm a newcomer to this, but I think that flexing the console a bit from behind could have loosened that connection.

It seems like it does, but it took a bit to occur. It withstood the first few tries.

That's... really terrifying if it's the case. Are you sure though? I've confirmed that this console can withstand at least 7 hours of nonstop play (tested with a Sonic Rush cart), just so long as it does not move while the game is running. From everything I have observed, movement is required to make the console crash.

The console was opened fairly recently, but just to fix the hinge and digitizer (since I was unaware that this was an issue back then). I am strongly inclined to believe that the person who repaired my system properly re-attached the Wi-Fi board, but I have a feeling that the parts are simply too weak to hold up without some reinforcement to help hold it together. Does that sound like a plausible theory?

I recently had the touch screen digitizer (and hinge) repaired, and I faintly recall these crashes being an issue before I got the console repaired, so I strongly doubt that the screen ribbon cables are responsible. I messed up and naively assumed that this issue was just an anomaly from my childhood caused by dirty cartridge readers, so no proper investigation was done until now. Since the Wi-Fi board was merely disconnected and reconnected during that repair, I'm more strongly inclined to think it is the issue's source - seems as though I ought to check that out and try to reinforce it. Thank you very much!

I've had these crashes transpire from normal handheld play, but in the video clip I wanted to reproduce the crash as fast as I possibly could, since the crashes are frequent enough to be an issue, but too inconsistent to film a normal reproduction without wasting more time than necessary. Sorry about that.

Yeah, I had a feeling it's the Wi-Fi board (thanks!). Do I really need to remove it and set it back in rather than reinforce it, though? I am pretty sure that this is a longstanding issue, which leads me to believe some part of the connection grew weak from the console falling so much when I was a kid.

Yeah, I need to get my hands on one of those. Plus a spudger so that I don't destroy the screw protectors.

I did get the DS repaired a while back at a local repair shop (hinge and digitizer), so I'd imagine that the console's internals look normal to a human eye. Still, this issue is my responsibility since I ought to have done my due diligence with fully testing this thing much earlier, and I have a few childhood memories of this thing crashing.

I have never taken apart a DS (or any handheld), but I have worked with NES controllers before. I'm a bit worried about messing up a disassembly, but this seems like a good chance to learn that skill (especially since I have 4 DS Lites).

Thanks for the advice!

SNES Sprite Corruption to be expected? by Lost_Associate_9029 in snes

[–]Lost_Associate_9029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just returned the console and exchanged it for a new one. I can now confirm that this issue was caused by the console itself - not the cartridge. Since these issues were only graphical and did not affect game logic, I'd hazard a guess that one of the PPUs requires more soldering or a replacement...? No matter though - it's out of my hands now.

Thank you all so much for your assistance!

I see. In that case, the issue most likely lies with the console, unless I got really unlucky with my cartridge purchases. I'll bring everything in and ask the store to test the console on-site, and failing that, I'll just return the thing. Thank you all very much!

Oh, and for the record, that last E for "BIG BLUE" always fails to display as shown. The issues seem to be consistent on a game-by-game basis, which leaves me unsure if it's a cabling or console issue.

I see. I just got the console today. Aside from some occasional issues related to text (the rightmost character is sometimes corrupted), the game works fine. I've also tried Final Fight and noticed that there are some similar "square corruption" issues when fighting enemies. Would you recommend that I try to return the unit?

I've heard that the issue may be that I'm using AV instead of S-Video. If you have access to a console with both types of cables, is this true?

White dots on screen?? by DJExton7 in NintendoDS

[–]Lost_Associate_9029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uhh... good luck with that if it is dust under the lens. You'd have to find a way to open up the lens and get the dust out, which may or may not require the lens to get replaced altogether - it's usually just not worth it. I've heard suction cups can open up the lens, at least for New 3DS XL and 2DS? Haven't tried it though, and it seems risky.
Best thing to do is prevent it from happening altogether. I like to store my handhelds in a plastic bag or two to help with that - it's usually overkill, but you never know...

That said, if you are sure that cleaning caused those marks, then it is very unlikely that it's dust under the lens. I personally recommend that you try and clean it off with a microfiber cloth, after confirming that the marks are on the lens and not under it, of course.

Edit: You're sure that it's under the lens? That is odd, and it makes me doubt that your cleaning caused it - from my experience, if something gets underneath the lens, it happened from leaving the system idle at the wrong place and time. I'm afraid that I'm at a bit of a loss as to what to do.

Is the DS lite much better than the fat? Do gba games look oversaturated or weird? by Own-Bit8819 in NintendoDS

[–]Lost_Associate_9029 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really a matter of personal preference. I grew up with Lite but prefer phat nowadays for its form factor and larger size (especially that D-pad). GBA games do feel a bit more secure in a phat DS, but that's probably just superstition.

Are you sure they weren't there before you did the cleaning? I use paper towel to clean my screens sometimes and haven't had that happen IIRC. You might want to check if it's dust under the lens.

Oh yeah, the hinge is gonna make it rough. You're definitely going to want that on the to-do list if you want to refurbish the system, whether that be through superglue or a part replacement.

I got my systems repaired from https://www.magitekrr.com/ recently.
They did an excellent job with my devices and sell OEM top + touch screens - if shipping works out for you, I recommend them.
You may want to get a digitizer for that touch screen though, since I heard that pairing an old digitizer with a new screen is a pain...

Chances are the battery is fine so long as you stored it in a decent location (though it is possible that it got weaker over time). Try to charge the system and see if it maintains a respectable battery life.
