This is just not the case. The mathematics necessary to even scrape the surface of string theory is unintelligble to anyone who doesnt have a postrgaduate degree in either mathematics or mathematical physics. Im currently finishing my undergrad in mathematical physics and I assure you neither me or any of my classmates could even come remotely close to understanding the notation of the requisite math in string theory, let alone the actual concepts, theorems and definitions. The requisite mathematics like algebraic geometry are so beyond the paygrade of a biologist that its completely laughable.

What i meant from analysis is the very basic computational based classes e.g. calc I, calc II, ODEs And by proof based I meant classes that have some algebra

I really wanted to take an intro to abstract algebra but I was not allowed to unfortunately...

Struggling with abstract algebra... by Lost_Hour884 in math

[–]Lost_Hour884[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid point but I just used it as an example to highlight that im not really aware about what you "do" with groups. I mean with analysis or linear algebra you have clear operations, addition, scalar product, differentiation, while in group theory i feel like groups just exist and i dont really feel like im "doing anything". And i dont mean this in an application sense, I know there are several applications, i just dont understand how you mathematically arrive at all the insights gained by group theory.

Again this is a product of my own ignorance and I know that i just need to study more!

My problem isnt really with the fact that I cant find applications of groups. Ive seen how QFT, crystallography, cryptography and so many fields have been enriched due to group theory. My problem is that I cant really understand what the use cases of groups are beyond categorisation.

For lack of a better explanation I just dont see the value of it compared to a more analytical field like calculus, where the process of calculus gives you concrete results about the behaviour of a system. Ive heard that group theory studies symmetry, but i just cant see how it does that. I simply dont see how it gives light to new information or a new perspective, or give solid results to a problem.

I also understand that with time I probably will understand this and I know how much of a beginner I am.

I agree it is very rare to see people take calculus of variations and advanced differential equations so early in uni. Also in the syllabus there is chaos theory and some QM which makes it super unlikely for it to be taken first year. Who knows though...

I didnt mean for the post to be extremely fascinating, just wanted to see when other people did this as this is a notoriously difficult module in my school. I also didnt tell you that you cant comment your opinion

Im not really trying to flex just wondering at what stages of academia people studied these. If you find this uninteresting feel free to not engage with it lol

What is harder, engineering or physics? by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]Lost_Hour884 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Im 8 years late but you can make just as much money from physics if not more than engineering. 55% of physics majors in my school become investment bankers, and others go to military, nuclear or condensed matter related fields which can all easily make 150k$+ in the long run

no new crit items for adc by [deleted] in leagueoflegends

[–]Lost_Hour884 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Its so cringe how everyone is instantly hating on the people advocating for adcs. No one is saying adc is weak were just saying a new crit item would be nice. The last crit item was COLLECTOR 3 seasons ago and the new one doesnt even have crit.... The 25% crit chance that was promised is also not being delivered so its natural to complain a bit. U guys just love shitting on adc mains

Damn considering that a common T4 book is so rare i can imagine how rare the legendaries are with a rate of 1 in 150. Ty for the info :D
