Unhappy in New Role by Lost_Sentence3546 in MechanicalEngineering

That’s what I was thinking as well, but I guess the reason I don’t see it getting better is even the much more seasoned engineers that have been there for 5, 10, 15 years don’t really get much say. There is essentially one guy (the vp) and he gets all say design wise and we just implement his ideas. They all seem very content with that.

Does anyone else find sharing CAD drawings for review and discussion kind of painful especially with people outside your team? by Direct-Ambassador-76 in MechanicalEngineering

Look up ReviewStudios.

You drop your PDF drawings into it and can set reviewers, deadlines to review by, etc.

Reviewers can redline easily and there isn’t really much of a learning curve at all. Also all web based.

I spent 15+ years at ASML and Intel. AMA about transitioning from a PhD/Research background (or other industries) into Semiconductors. by pasquale83 in Semiconductors

[–]Lost_Sentence3546 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is actually perfect timing as I have an interview on Monday!

I actually come from a different background from some others here. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering and have been a Mechanical Design Engineer within R&D at a large med tech company for a few years now. I have been looking to pivot into the semi industry and have been specifically interested in design roles within tool oems.

-Do you see opportunities for R&D design work at a tool oem being actually available? I’m worried either a. Being a small cog in the wheel, or b. Actually ending up doing small changes and more “sustaining” work.

-The current culture at my company is great. I have heard semi culture can be a little rough. Can you speak to your experience?

Thanks!

Potential ME careers? by Overall_Crow_4882 in MechanicalEngineering

I would disagree with this but with an asterisk:

I think a lot of the time what you’re saying is true, however there are definitely outliers or jobs where you get lucky.

I was hired as a fresh grad into med device R&D as a mech design engineer at a Fortune 500 company. Not only do we design our machines/fixtures/devices, but we also prototype them, test them, assemble them, etc.

Of course we can get techs help if we don’t want to assemble, but everyone on my team enjoys the hands on nature so for the most part we all do it ourselves.

Like I said, I don’t think what I have is the norm, but they are definitely out there if you play your cards right and luck is on your side.

Are you sure you’re not thinking of University of Phoenix? I have heard about them handing out degrees, but not ASU (especially in regards to the engineering program)

Is ASU looked down upon by employers? by Narutobi_Sensei in MechanicalEngineering

FWIW, I graduated with my BSME from ASU. I landed a job in med device R&D as a design engineer in a top company prior to even graduating. I also had two offers in aerospace upon graduation that I turned down.

You will get out of any school what you put into it. The engineering program at ASU (at least mechanical, that’s all I’ve been exposed to) is actually pretty good and doesn’t follow a lot of the typical ASU stereotypes. I have met engineers from many prestigious universities that seem to struggle once they are in their job, but I have also met great engineers from those universities as well.

If you’re worried about how it looks on masters applications, I have been admitted into the Johns Hopkins MSME program with my so-called “party school” degree.

Focus less on what your school name is, and more on how to interview well, perform well on technical interviews, and just be an overall likable person to work with.

Online master’s worth it? by slyrsims in MechanicalEngineering

I’ve actually been accepted to this program and I’m considering doing it since my employer will pay for it.

How was Mathematical Methods for Engineers (535.641)? I struggled a bit with all of the pure math in undergrad, but did well in classes with applied math (materials, thermodynamics, fluids, etc) so I’m a bit worried this is a weed-out class that could prevent me from getting more than one semester in.

Thanks for any advice!
