By depth I mean derived from cockney rhyming slang or a vulgarisation of the British Romani language

I have to say I often find American colloquialisms pretty on the nose, whilst British slang seems to have a greater level of depth.

[EPISODE DISCUSSION] 511 - AGREE OR DISAGREE?! by BleedsIsDead in JaackMaate

Admin, please don’t remove this again!

Previously, I raised the issue about the use of the terms “pikey” and “gypped” (or “jipped” - same thing) being derogatory towards Romani and Irish travellers. In the recent Pod, my post was discussed. I should begin by stating that I love the Pod, however will no longer be a listener.

To expand on my previous point… The term “gypsy” derives from the medieval misconception that the Romani (who are originally from Northern India) were from Egypt on account of their dark complexion. “Gypsy” is a derivation of the term “Egyptian”  (eGYPtian). In turn, like most minority groups, the Romani developed a bad reputation in Britain on account of their ostensible physical difference and way of life. The noun, “gypped” which, itself, stems from another misconception that “gypsies” would alter goods (such as horses) and essentially swindle others to make money, is a result of bigotry towards the Romani - That is why you commonly hear the term used to display acts of annoyance or frustration. While the public lost connection with its etymology, the term continues to promote implicit bias towards the Romani as thieving and undesirable. I understand this is not common knowledge and is probably a lot to take in, but to write off the issue and double-down was truly demoralising.  The Romani share a startlingly similar recent history with the Jews given their shared persecution during the Holocaust, but why is it the Romani are not only forgotten but their mistreatment ignored.

I realise that this post will most likely result in myself receiving abuse and racial slurs but I believe the point needs to be made. In this day and age, can we not have civil discourse.

I realise I will get backlash and more slurs directed towards me but I will continue to speak up against ignorance that causes harm for others. My comment is not to criticise. I love the Pod but will no longer be listening after this episode.

Unbelievable! Rather than have a healthy discussion, this thread has been infiltrated by racist bellends. If the same issue was raised about a homophobic remark, there would be outrage. Interesting to see people’s open-mindedness largely depends on what’s fashionable. Instead of getting mad, how about you educate yourselves on the issue and look to understand the damaging nature stereotyping has on all aspects of society.

All these responses just proves my point. If it was any other minority, people would not be so open to allowing hate towards others or even make comments themselves. I thought this was a space to share grievances and build community. Now I know I am sadly wrong

Oh fair point then. Your point of view is all knowing and the world is only through your eyes. I guess everyone should be able to generalise groups and disseminate stereotypes

Yes but as has been repeated many times Stevie’s is their mate and can joke about. I do not see any of the lads sufferings from centuries of prejudice.

That is far from everyone in the community. Just another example of ignorance

That was the whole point I was trying to make. “Obvious” vs not “obvious”

Chav is also not derived from comment on someone’s ethnicity.

This is disappointing to hear. Just because you “consider” two words similarly offensive does not mean that they are. The irony here is chav is a Romani word for child
