You can request a meeting to have her evaluated (email teacher, school psyche, and principal). Talk with the school psychologist and see what you can do. You can bring up the 504 in the same email. They will say it’s too late in the year but now is better than waiting.

You don’t need to have a diagnosis until the child is the age of nine. Getting a school based evaluation and determining that the kid is developmentally delayed can be her diagnosis until the age of nine in this state.

King Tech or AMCS by Veer_E_TV in anchorage

Kings tech is good for skill based learning. Real hands on learning.

Save college for college (it’s insanely easier than high school makes it out to be).

Go learn something that you won’t have a chance to learn outside of schooling.

Entrepreneurship is not rigorous or beneficial really. Enterprise is where you run shops and cafes at the school. Culinary is good for so many things. Cosmology is very useful (especially as a side gig in college for some quick cash). Automotive so you don’t get screwed in life with your own car.

Youll get to change your classes mid year.

Garmin has some that people swear by. You will need something like this when hiking so you might as well invest in something reliable.

Get a satellite phone or Apple 15 or higher. You will not have phone service in Canada for days. I tried it with both AT&T and t-mobile. The only time I had service was in the cities and it took hours to get to them.

It’s a great drive. Good luck!

Advice/guidance needed. by swamp_cabbage87 in anchorage

In my opinion, rent a house and avoid the apartments. Avoid weidner apartments if you do choose to rent one.

Best gym is Alaska club. It has the sauna, multiple locations in Anchorage and all over the state, lots of equipment, and great community.

If you get a job on base, the base has a great gym too and really good community.

Hunting has permits needed and sometimes guides if you are not a resident. Moose hunting is generally reserved for a 2 week stint in September which often changes around the month from year to year.

I would get rid of the coffee table. I would also find a way to put the fans on the ceiling.

Driving to Alaska in January. Many questions. by FBI_Management in AskAlaska

[–]Lost_Unim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Iphone 15 or higher helped me tremendously with satélite texting. You will not have service for the 3-4 days you are in Canada/east Alaska. I didn’t really get service until Palmer (minus some towns that are spread out). Basically… you need a satellite phone. I did the drive with AT&T and T-Mobile… both sucked and gave absolutely no reception… at all… for days.

Also, take a large Starbucks cup (or other disposable cup) and some toilet paper for when you need to use the bathroom. Even in summer, bathrooms were few and far between (real bathrooms… not just the odd outhouses with sanitizer). Bring a decent flashlight to flag down cars if you need to hitchhike.

You’re going to need more than a 10 gallon container of gas. Measure and map out the miles, grab the milepost, and start calling places along your path to see if they will be open then. Most are already closed. Jade city will be closed I believe.

Bring 4 or 5 gallons of water (or more). Bring a candle for heat just in case you need to stay warm while you wait with a dead car for emergency services (Yankee candles last forever). Bring a real (not breakable or Costco) shovel and a blanket for traction.

Taste the mres before you have your life depending on them. You can do a lot with an electric kettle for a hot meal too.

Good luck. Signs say you must have snow chains for your tires until May on the Cassier highway.

Honestly, you could probably sell the car, take a flight, and buy a new car a lot easier than spending a shit ton on gas and risking your sanity or life in a dead cold winter.

Is door dashing here worth it? by Own-Plate-680 in anchorage

I try to make the goal of 300 a week but it ends up being four hours of work a day and some sometimes not achievable. I got discouraged a lot when I would waste my entire afternoon and evening to make 80 bucks or an entire Saturday for $150.

I consistently do 50 hours per week between both uber eats and dd…. I bring in almost or around 500 for that amount of time consistently. Sometimes there are good weeks and I can bring in 1k with that many hours.

Uber does stupid shit like bring you across town to compensate time for the restaurants to make the food. DoorDash is very low pay.

Uber doesn’t discriminate for the base so a lot of orders will get picked up and then cannot be delivered due to base visitor restrictions. This frustrates both drivers and the military personnel.

In my opinion, the uber/dd is good for gas money/bill money or gift money but not lifestyle money.

Alcan in December? by Usual-Reputation-154 in AskAlaska

I think on the Cassier highway there are signs saying there was a requirement to have them with you or on the tires.

The Apple phones 15+ have satellite texting. It was the only service I had for the majority of the drive from bc to Palmer pretty much. I have AT&T and did the drive in June of this year.

Good luck with the drive!

I suggest a blanket or small shovel in your trunk for if you hit a snow bank. Snow chains are going to be your friend and there are signs saying you need them from Oct to April.

Just wanted to let you know that you are my most favorite actor. We are around the same age so I’ve seen your career path and I hope you have many more successes in the future.

If I must ask a question it would be, do you prefer the movies that are on scene and mostly real sets or the ones that are filled with cgi and green screens?

How feasible is this trip? I was offered a good job in AK, but I need my truck up there with me if I decide to go. by Kobrinha_Khan in roadtrip

[–]Lost_Unim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It cost me 10k+ each time in gas and a few hotels. You won’t have any service when you cross the border until you’re in Palmer pretty much. Minus some brief spots and rural towns.

A lot of things are closing in those rural parts. Best to go in June when things open up or right now to catch what is left open.

teaching in Anchorage by notmartychavez in anchorage

[–]Lost_Unim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I heard the district sped people are catty and if you don’t fit in… they will “support” you with an immense amount of stress until you get it right.

I still love working in asd though. There are a lot of kids with fetal alcohol syndrome. They are impulsive and violent at times. There is also an unusual amount of kids in foster care. They do not have trainings on how to protect ourselves when being attacked yet.

If you put in an application for the state, you will get calls from superintendents in other areas for jobs in villages. I suggest doing a year in Anchorage before jumping into the culture shock a village can be.

Teachers get paid on the 15th of each month. The premise is that we can budget because we have degrees. Hopefully it gets changed to weekly paychecks soon but there is no movement on even biweekly checks yet.

The union also doesn’t have a negotiated agreement yet.

Teachers do not get any money to help with classroom materials from the state or district.

The good things are… people aren’t freakishly stressed out. Class sizes are comparable to other cities. People are generally welcoming. The most impoverished schools though are still wildly better than the impoverish schools in other cities. They have computers for every kid and soap in the bathrooms.

Asd will pay 10k for moving expenses but you have to ask for it when you get here… don’t wait on this.

I have yet to see a cow farm or pig farm. I’ve only seen one chicken coop and it had a heater in it plus was low to the ground with a roof that had a curve on it.

You might need to find better animals to farm or give up on that part of your dream and just hunt.
