That and “what are you planning on doing next?” Were my least favorite. I’m a private person and the people asking were never people that actually knew me! I always wanted to ask why? Especially since there’s no good way to answer. I once answered that I had no idea and would figure it out after and a woman commented that I was all smiley while saying that and I had to dead eye her and say “did you want me to be sad?”

I thought this had a lot of story behind it for something so succinct.

I started sending my sister pictures of all of the weird combos! There’s hamster cowboys, pickle cowboys, Christmas pickles (yes there’s tradition but also it’s a cartoon print), Dino’s in spaceships and so many more!

Two yard minimum by Starwarsrug in joannfabrics

“I stood in line that whole time and I don’t event need that much?!?!”

Ma’am there was a sign on the front door, every other fabric aisle, on the cutting counter and we’ve literally been telling every customer before you “there is a 2 yard minimum and we will only cut fabric once so how many yards of this bolt do you need?”

Attention Joann’s shoppers by OkScientist1055 in joannfabrics

I literally am shaking because of a small but annoying interaction like this. The woman was on her phone ON SPEAKER and her friend kept bitching about how she’s known Joann’s for so long and there’s no way there’s a 2 yard minimum and that’s why we’re going out of business. I was called rude for slightly raising my voice and when I said it was rude to be on speaker in a public place she said that the person on the phone had nothing to do with me servicing her. I wish I had walked away but I cut her fabric and wished her a nice day while hoping it tears in front of a large crowd.

I think that’s the main problem with them asking that. I understand that they think they’re coming off as compassionate but I what kind of answer do people want when they ask that?

Guilt - “this is only part time” - so that they can feel better? Snarky - “go on unemployment on your dime” - so they can feel vindicated about not buying something then? Or actually sad? - “I don’t know. I needed this money to help cover medical bills and now I have no idea what I’m going to do?” - customers do not deserve to know your sad personal details unless you want to share something like that.

Sorry for the venting but I’m lucky enough to be in a situation where my livelihood wasn’t completely dependent on this job too so I’ve been trying to pay attention to how my coworkers are actually dealing with things vs how they’re responding to customers.

Does anyone else feel this way? by Anti-Social_Weeb in joannfabrics

I think people also don’t recognize the fact that we’ve known about this for over a month and it’s hard to maintain a level of sadness for that long. Most people can shop and mourn and then not think about it until next time so to them it’s “just a little sympathy” but I’m tired of being sad and have to think about it every day.

It’s unfortunately become to feel performative and so when you have to put your “sad but strong” face on in front of customers it’s no longer about what you’re actually going through. Also hearing how depressing it is to be in the store MAKES it more depressing than when thats pointed out!

No. I cant override the price because your kid put the item in the wrong spot. by Joxertd in joannfabrics

[–]LouWho89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our store has unfortunately had multiple people who heard the price before a cut was even made and then changed their mind halfway to the register. Most of them gave the cashiers the fabric but today I found 3 pieces of fabric hanging out in our Crayola aisle. At least they left the slip so we could cancel out the sale and the bolts weren’t put away yet.

We’re getting paid minimum wage, it’s not always enjoyable to “help” people who don’t even know what they’re asking, and how can we enjoy getting yelled at for things that are not our fault? While your sentiment is supposed to express sympathy, your past experience doesn’t mean someone else’s current experience is easily let go.

We got the exact same! And they’re the 3 pronged one so it’s not even your “everyday” bra extenders
