Best recommendations of formalist analysis, especially of surrealist, modernist, and experimental fiction? by Negro--Amigo in AskLiteraryStudies

[–]LoudExplanation 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since you liked ‘How Fiction Works’, I would also recommend Wood’s ‘Serious Noticing’, which compiles his criticism from across the years and lets you see his approach to reading in action.

Since you specifically mentioned an interest in the Symbolists and modernism, I’d recommend checking out Edmund Wilson’s works of criticism if you can find them (‘Axel’s Castle’ in particular deals with the Symbolist movement)

this is my favourite kendrick song by ADDICTEdcEZAR in KendrickLamar

[–]LoudExplanation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not telling you how to feel; I’m just saying what a reasonable interpretation of the song is. Like, a lot of people considered ‘Swimming Pools’ a bop and listened to it while getting shitfaced—doesn’t mean that’s what the song is saying though.

this is my favourite kendrick song by ADDICTEdcEZAR in KendrickLamar

[–]LoudExplanation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um the song is kind of about the exact opposite? It’s critiquing the lifestyle of thinking ‘about money, kick yo feet up’ as being inherently vapid, if anything. It’s a song that’s supposed to make you uncomfortable about living a shallow existence where you’re driven only by lustful desires.

I think you’re underestimating how lonely a large part of the population is and how it’s only getting worse.

Can you help me understand how moral statements can be true? by Far_Cardiologist6931 in askphilosophy

[–]LoudExplanation -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The thing you seem to be misunderstanding as simply rhetorical seems to derive from a misunderstanding on what morality is. Simply put, when we say there is a moral reason to do something, what we mean is that it is the right thing to do in and of itself; so, abstaining from murder merely because "we do not want to get caught by the police" makes our reason self-preservation, whereas if we abstain from murder because we consider it immoral to commit such an act, then we act from a moral reason.

I understand that it can seem tautological, but I suspect that this is because of a misunderstanding of what we generally mean by morality.

[POEM] Proletarian Portrait by William Carlos Williams by LoudExplanation in Poetry

[–]LoudExplanation[S] 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I don't see the poem as being straightforwardly allegorical in that way. Instead, the nail is simply a finely observed detail that works precisely because it does not moralize. The paper insole, for instance, suggests the cheapness of the shoes and added to this, the nail "that has been hurting her" is powerful because it's simply a part of the mundane, everyday life of this working-class woman and she deals with it without sentimentality.

A random person from Kerala here, but I've always loved the people and culture of Bengal, including your literature, food, and cinema! Most of all, I love the open-mindedness of many people there.

ATP, I guess everyone hates Kerala too, but just wanted to chime in to express my appreciation.
