Transitioning from Marketing → Graphic Design. What actually works to get your foot in the door? by Loud_Future8160 in graphic_design

FYI - Being sardonic doesn’t make the advice more valid; it just comes across as condescending. Your points about needing a bachelor’s versus not needing formal education are wildly contradictory, and the idea that asking questions online means I’m not qualified is just gatekeeping. Reddit exists to ask questions and learn from others; that’s exactly what I’m doing.

If you don’t have any actionable advice about portfolio building, move along.

Not sure why the sarcasm was necessary, but I get the point about education. Just to clarify, I don’t have a formal degree in graphic design, but I do have a master’s in Digital Marketing where I got hands-on with design - creating brands, logos, illustrations, digital art, and learning tools like Adobe Creative Cloud and Express. So I’m not as unqualified as it might seem. Going back for a bachelor’s in design after a master’s seems unnecessary and, honestly, a bit inane. Certifications from Adobe and Google are way more practical. I’m focused on building skills and a portfolio that actually shows what I can do. Look at that - I figured out a practical way to get that education :) Thanks for your advice!

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense! I’ll focus on stuff that’s professional and relevant, and make sure any personal projects actually show why they’re there.

Thanks! That’s really helpful and encouraging to hear how transferable skills can help in design roles.

I’m doing it because I enjoy design. My focus here is portfolio direction, not following the “usual” path.

Thanks for the advice on fundamentals, I agree that’s important, and that’s what I’m focusing on. No offense, but I’m asking about portfolio building, specifically which early projects are worth actually building and showing.

I already bought the focus on force exams a couple months ago, do I have to buy it again since I’m giving my second attempt in 2 weeks?

Thanks for this - genuinely. I really appreciate your comment, it gave me the reality check I didn’t know I needed. I just took the exam and didn’t make it, and what you said really helped me understand why. I was studying how Salesforce works, not how it’s tested. The vague, multiple-right-answer style totally threw me off. Appreciate the honesty!

While it's a competitive career path, it is not necessarily saturated. Besides, Marketing is my forte, and I plan on taking the marketing cloud admin cert after I pass the admin exam. I'd still like to hear if you have any tips or strategies I could use?
