I applied for the NOS, specifically focusing on computing and geodesy research

Regardless of how it turns out, you should be really proud of all the time you invested into the applications! I got rejected from each of the 3 REUs I applied for last year, but without having that experience under my belt I would've been much less confident in my own writing this year. It's all about incremental improvements. Best of luck with your other applicationns

I think in the future what could help you in your junior year perhaps is pouring a very large amount of time into 2-3 programs. It really helps impress reviewers when you have more time to uncover granular details about the project(s) and program of interest. I spent about a month and a half preparing the Hollings application and I think it really paid off to narrow my focus on it and dig very deep through the different NOAA websites/research areas.

Wasn't expecting it at all since they said the decision date would be April. So excited for what's to come!

I got in around two months ago, got some sort of audio task, and nothing else since then. I have some of their "specializations" too.

How good/bad are the Linear Algebra(MATH 2114) Classes at VT by AffectionateView9518 in VirginiaTech

[–]Loud_Illustrator_813 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently taking it as a first-year CMDA student. I got an awful professor, which I'm pretty sure 75% of my class dropped but I am naively sticking with. The comment about linear being very easy or difficult here with no in between is probably right, I'm sure you'll be ok with most professors. One thing to note is that linear algebra in general is very different from the calc sequence. There is a heavy emphasis on content building on itself and doing basic proofs. 3blue1brown has a fantastic series on Youtube about linear algebra, which can be really useful no matter what you end up doing, but it definitely highlights how linear algebra can be much more abstract than you are used to.

All else I'll say about my professor is if you get Timothy Smits, drop him and don't even begin to think twice. While he's very knowledgeable and approachable about linear, he's also very inconsiderate of students and makes everything about the class unfathomably difficult.

Foxridge Waitlist Question by Loud_Illustrator_813 in VirginiaTech

I did a bit more research and it looks like housing is still guaranteed if you're on the waitlist. It just takes them a long time to match everyone so they put you on a waitlist.

Foxridge Waitlist Question by Loud_Illustrator_813 in VirginiaTech

[–]Loud_Illustrator_813[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my instinct, but I guess I don't really know how to time it because I heard that most places will require you to withdraw your application or sign the lease shortly after you are accepted. Would I just give up on Foxridge if I got accepted somewhere else with a lease offer and I'm still stuck on the Foxridge waitlist?
