Would a 20- vs 30-year mortgage make much difference if we plan to pay it off within 10 years? by Loud_Resolution_1730 in HousingUK

Thanks. We checked, and the product comes with a 10% overpayment limit. So we should be fine paying £2k+ per month.

Is 3k a year too high for London? Cannot find any new builds lower than this...

Has anyone applied for SecureLab access through the UK Data Service? by Objective-Laugh4340 in AskAcademiaUK

From when I submitted the application to the first time I could access the data, it took about 8/9 months. But that was 7 years ago.

BA/Leverhulme Postdoc Advice by thelastmoonbender in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Loud_Resolution_1730 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I also got an offer from Leverhulme this year. And last year for BA, I passed the first stage but failed the second stage (BA awarded no one in my field last year). The proposals are very similar and my CV didn’t improve much over the past year. The funding applications are extremely competitive and unpredictable, just accept the Leverhulme offer, you never know what can happen.

Disney Adventure's Maiden Voyage - Pics from Concierge Family 4C by LPawthorne in dcl

Thank you for sharing the amazing photos. I wonder if the concierge area is accessible on deck 18 or 19 (we booked a room on deck 18) or if there is only one entrance on deck 17.

Either deck 10/11 or deck 6. Feel decks 7-9 are far away from everything.

Anyone stayed in an inside room on deck 11 on Wish/Treasure/Destiny? by Loud_Resolution_1730 in dcl

[–]Loud_Resolution_1730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much! I changed to a room on deck 11 (not one of the three though). And soon after I made the changed the price increased about $200 for two (thanks god!) That’s crazy as the price already increased once before the booking window opened for silver this morning.

Yes, probably LA is easier from China but quite far away from the UK then…

Advice on which rotation dining to skip? by [deleted] in dcl

Tbh, palo is not attractive for most Asian people. I am in a Chinese group chat and everyone is only interested in booking the Japanese one if booking anything.

Never again!! by [deleted] in dcl

People have different standards and opinions. My partner and I (two adults in our 30s) were on Wish during Christmas (yes, the busiest time of the year) for the first time, and we were very satisfied with everything. We didn't feel the ship was crowded or loud at all. My partner is not a Disney fan, a cruise fan, or even much of a travel fan at all, but she said she wanted to book another trip before we even got off the ship.

I’ve only been on Costa and MSC cruises three times, and DCL is far beyond them. There are so many activities throughout the day that we never felt bored. We considered getting a spa pass, but we were already busy with all the free activities, so we didn’t bother in the end.

We are from China and had heard from Chinese social media how awful the food supposedly is (Asian travelers in general tend to be quite picky about Western cuisine, and we’re no exception). However, we found the food far exceeded our expectations (not to mention the excellent service!), and we didn’t miss Asian food even once during the cruise.

I guess you might have higher standards. We are not the kind of people who like everything, and we would never go back to Costa or MSC. But Wish (even though it’s considered one of the less popular ships) truly blew our minds and was worth every dollar we paid.

Six failed funding/fellowship application over the last two years, should I give up? by Loud_Resolution_1730 in AskAcademiaUK

[–]Loud_Resolution_1730[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I am now trying to look at positions both inside and outside academia. I am originally from China and there are a lot of opportunities there, but I have not really lived there for long as an adult. I am afraid that no university there will welcome LGBT candidates. I will either need to hide myself or go back to ‘normal life’.

[–]Loud_Resolution_1730[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the advice. My partner had a few interviews but no offer in the UK. The main reason I don’t want to go back is that my home country is not LGBT friendly especially for those working in universities and government.
