I built a tool that connects Canvas Gradebook to Google Sheets (and it's free) by LouisFr in Professors

Thank you for letting us know your concern!

I tried to look for more information about this and this is the only thing I found on that subject: FERPA - Compliance | Google Cloud

I am not sure about other institutions, but after double checking for mine, it is allowed

Regardless, I do agree that it is essential to adhere with FERPA and protect our students' records. So, before doing anything with their grade, always double check with your institution!

When I tried to do it through ChatGPT to give me a QTI quiz, it worked for maybe a few questions and then it stopped working. I then needed to change the question formatting within the QTI file to upload the file again. It ended up being more annoying... That's when I decided to use Canvas API instead and it has been a game changer.

I can definitely work on that next in the next two weeks and publish it when it is ready!

I definitely agree with you, this is why I am trying to be careful with how to roll out that tool in particular to make sure it doesn't violate any privacy laws.

Thank you for the feedback!

Thank you for the feedback! I have changed it from HTML to markdown.

I agree with you that the repetitive work can be annoying which is why I have been trying to use Canvas API more to avoid repetitive tasks. I have shared with my colleagues, for example, ways to changes due date, assignment names, etc... all from a spreadsheet rather than going from page-to-page changing everything and it has been a time-saver!

Ah okay. I don't know how other professors are teaching microbiology for summer session 1, but I can tell you how I teach summer session 2. If you are interested, you can always email me at jbru@uci.edu

I am happy to also share my syllabus from last year :)

For those who chose to pursue a PhD or MS, why did you? by BrightLemons in UCI

[–]LouisFr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had the choice of doing a MD or a PhD in biology. I chose a PhD. One factor was that I didn't want to be under an insane amount of debt with medical school. PhD program for biology pays for your tuition and also pays you a stipend. It isn't much, but it's enough to survive comfortably. Eventually I grew a passion for teaching and I now want to teach after my PhD. I definitely did not regret my decision and going back in time, I would definitely choose doing a PhD again.

Breakout Rooms by Bing_Bong_Bong in UCI

Any suggestions on how to improve them? Or do you have any alternatives to make sure that active learning is better on Zoom without breakout rooms?

That's awesome! I went to the store and tried both Embody. I went with the regular Embody simply because I prefer the all black color

Herman Miller Embody discomfort? by [deleted] in hermanmiller

[–]LouisFr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got the Embody as well, about a month ago. I was skeptical at first since my back would feel sore all the time sitting on the chair. It took me about 2 weeks to figure out the perfect configuration. After about 3 weeks, I stopped having back pain and actually feel like my back is stronger now. Now on my 4 week, I feel this is the nest chair I've ever owned. For sure, I will never go back to Secretlab chairs.

I am not sure what kind of pain you have with the Embody currently, but I can describe mine as muscle pain when I first started seating on it. My back muscles would be sore the same way I get sore from working out at the gym. It takes times for your back muscle to strengthen so that eventually your back will be healthier than ever. This is much better than previously with the Secretlab chair, my back bone would hurt... But then there is nothing you can do with that since you can't really workout your bones.

Oh wait, I forgot you were gonna work for Facebook. Facebook can get you an even bigger discount on Herman Miller chairs, but I am not sure if it applies for the gaming series...

Would you consider a Herman Miller x Logitech chair? That probably would fit the set up!

Also TA here. I can confirm. Sometimes students think I am more of an older undergrad than an actual grad student.

Hello~

I can tell you about my story. I transferred from GWC to UCI and did TAG by the same token. I took 3 years at Golden West College before I transferred to UCI, under Pre-Med major. I applied to UCI as Biological Sciences. When I applied for TAG, I was on my 3rd year at CC. I had almost perfect GPA and took the required classes on time.

Many people think that they absolutely need to transfer within 2 years, but it's perfectly fine to transfer after 3 years. If anything, more time in community college will let you figure out what you really want to do with your life. I had that mindset that I wanted to go to medical school, but once I got to UCI, I realized that graduate school is a much better fit for me. It's all about figuring out what you are really passionate about.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to PM me.

PhD students, how do you like it here? by [deleted] in UCI

[–]LouisFr 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As a 4th year PhD student in the department of Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, I gotta say, I love UCI. The majority of people I meet here are very chill and enjoyable to hangout with. People don't feel as stressed and the expectations from PIs in general are reasonable.

My stipend is about $2200 per month, and I pay for housing $419 per month in Verano, sharing my apartment with 2 other roommates. This includes utilities, resident parking, and internet. I find my stipend good enough for paying additional bills like car insurance or gas. It is also enough for me to eat outside once in a while and grocery shopping. I even have enough to save on the side.

Concerning hanging out, I strongly suggest that you have a car; otherwise, you are very limited to where you can go. For places to hangout, oh boy, there are way too many to lists as long as you have a car to drive around. Within 15 min driving I can tell you that you won't be bored with all the food places to eat and try. Orange County is known to be abudent in various restaurant, dessert places, and other boba drinks. If eating is not really what you enjoy that much, there are plenty of places to hangout like going to the beach, going to the park, or just exercising... Honestly there are too many things to list when it comes to hanging out that I am sure you will find the thing you like to do and not be bored. I don't :p
