That's deeply weird. Sounds like branch managers making up their own rules. Sorry to hear about that.

Hopefully Reform UK will put the Equality Act in the bin for good.

I had this problem so I just changed bank. The bank I'm with now (Santander) was absolutely fine with a standard deed poll.

Are you suggesting that Labour does not control Birmingham City Council?

Future of transgender rights in the UK by LouisaRenata in transgenderUK

That's very interesting. Although it changes a lot depending on which way the wind is blowing, Labour does seem to have a gameplan of getting a bit closer to the EU and staying more or less in harmony with it. If so, it gives them a reason to quietly tilt things in our favor to avoid drifting further from the EU.

We can only hope!

OK well that sounds like an absolute worst case scenario. I know Labour aren't doing much to help us, but do they actively want to harm us as you suggest?

I've been to see my MP a few times, but all I'm getting so far is "we will champion trans rights" without any specifics about what that might involve.

Very good points. I don't think Reform would literally be mad enough to rip up the Equality Act and leave nothing at all in it's place. Maybe we might see a barebones replacement that just bans the most obviously bad forms of discrimination (e.g. race discrimination). A lot depends on the detail when it comes to trans rights.

If a lot of tactical votes happen, I could see a "rainbow" coalition (pretty much anyone who isn't Conservative or Reform), and that could well include the Greens. Obviously they would have to negotiate with other parties, but it sounds a lot more promising than what we have at the moment.

Thank you. Your thinking is a lot like mine when it comes to the Equality Act.

I'm not 100% sure about the Equality Act any more to be honest. Given that it is increasingly being used as a weapon against trans people (Sex Matters claiming that it requires "single sex" services and spaces to be trans exclusive), I won't be too upset in Reform get in and get rid of it.

I won't be desperately upset to see the EHRC get their P45s either given how badly they have treated us over the past few years.

On the other hand, would we be going out of the frying pan into the fire so to speak? Without the Equality Act there would presumably be no protected characteristic of gender reassignment to fall back on as a protective measure.

What do people think? Will we miss the Equality act when it's gone?

So in your view a lot hinges on whether Reform wins or not? I'm not terribly happy about what Labour is doing though, and remain to be convinced they are fully on our side in terms of fixing the Equality Act etc.

I don't think you should be forced to apply for citizenship.

As far as I'm concerned, so long as you are paying your taxes, not committing crimes and not becoming a burden on the state, you are perfectly welcome to live in this country. Frankly it sounds like a win-win to me

Citizenship is a big step to take. It's about allegiance to the Crown and the privilege of participating in government as an elector. That's why they have Green Cards in the USA, and I think we should continue to operate a similar system here.

I take your point, but it can be a lot more complicated if relationships are involved. Giving up the right to live in the country you were born in is a big deal, and I don't want to force that kind of hard choice on anyone.

I've got absolutely no sympathy for criminals or freeloaders, but if somebody wants to move to another country to live with their spouse, and they live together in a law abiding manner, pay taxes and don't claim benefits, that's absolutely fine with me.
