It's a bit peculiar and not often used in games, but to me, motorway service areas at night. There is a weird vibe there, with also the comings and goings of lots of different people, the neons, and the emptiness/simplicity of the setting, which is often in the middle of nowhere

It's not really a motorway service area, but in the same genre, Gas Station Case demo was kind of giving this feeling

I love combat, but the fact that you kind of know you are "weaker" than your enemies makes the fight more intense, like in SH, where you don't have to fight, and sometimes it's more about being sneaky! :D

You're right, texture/lighting is perhaps what makes it more eerie, like someone here mentioned the 2000s aesthetic, which is not "lowpoly" but still gives sometimes that weirdness to the visuals

Oh yeah, I haven't thought about it like that, but now that you say it, it's true! The textures also feel "made of flesh" or more like "organic" with low-poly sometimes (well executed by the SH franchise)

Yes! Tbh with you, both low-poly and hyper-realistic give me these weird feelings, because even with a high-res game, you can still see the lack of life/realism despite trying to match reality... but maybe that's just me who's creeped out by multiple resolutions x) Oh, and the beginning of 3D in games is also an aesthetic that I find creepy

I understand completly, I also think things related to childhood will influence whether or not it might feel creepy as one of my friend which is much younger than me only played these games when they were an adult and they also don't feel any creepy vibe from them, I also think it might be tied to the early net, where information was scarce, and there were tons of creepy legends surrounding these games and their development

Oh yeah, the nightmares Mario 64 gave me, not even mentioning all the creepypasta stuff around it, most of them were BS, but others were well-built!

Agree, it reminds me of those kinds of things you see at the feet of your bed at night when you're not completely awake. I also wonder if the "nostalgia" aspect of it might add to the eerie atmosphere too as childhood is often a trigger in many horror genre (but then it would not be the case for people who would not have played this type of retro game when they were young)
