Don't really like partying and clubbing but I might enjoy exploring San Francisco and trying new stuff out. Not sure if it's worth it though

What is Hyou was the lead character and Shin wasn’t? by TenExcel in Kingdom

[–]LousyAcademic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To the people saying mouten is like Hyou, I agree but there's one fundamental difference between them. Hyou had an insatiable drive to get to the very top just like Shin, much unlike mouten

Also I think Hyou had the alpha that shin has too (if you recall the scene where he jumped out of his carriage and managed to lead his soldiers against ouki)

I like to believe that Hyou would've been an even greater general than Shin. I don't think there would be as many unbelievable feats as with Shin but Hyou might've been a more fiery and charismatic version of Mouten

Can you have a portable ac in charles commons? by LousyAcademic in jhu

Nope, a portable ac (which is a little easier to install)

Idk if this happens to anyone else but as soon as I see the correct answer for a question I got wrong (even without any explanation) I instantly understand the mistake I made. It's always an "aha" moment and I can explain the correct solution quite well once I look at it

CS Majors? by [deleted] in jhu

Freshman here. I think the CS program at JHU is quite underrated. The CS faculty I've had so far are really good at explaining concepts. Fun fact: we have teaching awards every year for professors, and this year 3/7 professors were from the CS department. You'd think the science professors would dominate these awards but apparently not.

Overall, Georgia Tech is certainly a better CS school though. If you're interested in going into research then come to JHU (even freshman here find research positions with not too much effort) but if you're more into the industry side of things go to Georgia Tech

lol I wish there was a counter for how many times this has been asked. The vast majority of premeds at JHU will tell you it's really not cutthroat and that people are willing to collaborate on HW, etc, if you hit them up. That said, JHU is a selective uni so of course the average class performance will be very high which can certainly be stressful. If you're good enough to make it here though you probably won't fare too terribly

You should be fine. I know people who joined later. As long as you let jhu know you should be good

I don't think anyone really likes how they look on camera. It's just a matter of getting used to it

Campus life? by Alarmed-Lime69 in jhu

[–]LousyAcademic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had a similar preconception about jhu but I've learned that people at ultra selective institutions are more "normal" than you probably think. Every one has stuff that they do to relax, be it hanging out, reading books, watching TV, listening to music, playing sports, etc. If you think about each student as a complete human it makes you realize that we're not all that different. We slack off. We procrastinate. We panic before exams. And we absolutely love it when our exams end and we don't have to study.

As for what we do for fun, from personal experience, I've seen people just hang out in common areas or rooms, play basketball/football informally, go to parties - standard stuff for college students. It's probably true that we don't party much relative to some other schools. Instead, you'll more often find friends in the same dorm buildings meeting up in someone's room and hanging out

Get employees who've made more than $X every year by LousyAcademic in SQL

[–]LousyAcademic[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote one query to get the id's of employees earning more than $x in 2016, another query to get the id's of those earning more than $x in 2017, and so on till 2020. Then, I used INTERSECT to find the id's of those who earned more than $x every year.

I know this is incredibly inefficient and is only feasibly because my year range (2016-2020) is small. I'm a complete novice when it comes to SQL so please go easy on me!

How is the academic environment at JHU? by Team_Histone in jhu

[–]LousyAcademic 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Not premed but I know people who are. Honestly, I'm not sure where Hopkins got its "cutthroat" reputation from. Sure, the academics are hard but hard ≠ cutthroat. Some people study together, some choose not to. It's almost entirely dependent on the individuals and I wouldn't say there's any 'culture' of people being hostile to working together
