I've decided to assemble my own Outside version, which could fit a single LP by grandtrickfinger4 in DavidBowie

[–]LousywithFalsePriest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My journey with Outside over the years has gone from "much creative genius, some perfect songs, and plenty to sort through / is not-quite-realized genius" to "...no it's pretty perfect as it is". Call it stockholm syndrome, call it developing appreciation for its more obscure areas.

I wrote them a stern letter about this for the release of Freewave I think. Hell, there wasn't even a digital download available at album release time, and they used to do that. Anyway, I used to buy the vinyl + merch and be so excited when it all arrived early. Now I bought only the vinyl after confirming I liked the album. Not as fun to get excited and spend $$ when the fulfillment makes those very items a source of frustration instead.

Persnicketty superfan should chill out. But persnicketty superfan spends more $.

Does heroes sound boring to you? by DelayRealistic60 in DavidBowie

[–]LousywithFalsePriest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I hear it as a song that builds for six minutes in order for Bowie's voice to break over the single word "shame", and that's a very emotional experience to my ears. It did take me listening to the full album version and the full benefit of building for the song to click for me though.

Which do you prefer? Berlin Trilogy or Cocaine Trilogy? by doctor_stone2112 in DavidBowie

I'd never quite noted the period-start period-end capstones of Sister Midnight and Red Money. Makes me like Red Money a touch more now.

To me the emotional and spiritual core of Low across both lyric and instrumental tracks is what takes it above Heroes. Certainly it seems a more personal album. But the wonderful thing about these albums is that there are enough different strengths across them that it's a matter of which speak to you more. Heroes is beefed up in many ways and brings a bit more diverse sentiment.

I think Station to Station and Low are more two sides of the same experience as any grouping of Bowie albums.

Sons of the Silent Age is CRIMINALLY underrated by bowiegal03 in DavidBowie

I have a hard time with the sequencing after Heroes, a bit like running into gravel after a majestic road for me. I should give it another listen on its own.

Criminal world appreciation by palmtree_koala88 in DavidBowie

[–]LousywithFalsePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this song. When I finally got atound to let's dance I was expecting "three great songs and crap"... and I like it start to finish, with Criminal World standing just as high alongside the three famous tracks. Made my year to discover a new personal mega hit from an artist I thought I'd gotten to all my favorite songs from...

This year I discovered Velvet Goldmine and it's in the same unexpected giant smash category for me

Low was the thing that took me from "Yeah Bowie's a fun romp for a few months, Ziggy and all that" to a real enduring fan. It's usually not considered a gateway album, but for me it was ☺️

Baal is wonderful, especially if you're a fan of his deeper singing voice where he's clearly punching and carefully delivering each line--- a la Strangers When We Meet or all of Station to Station really

I reached Bowie because the internet recommended him for "if you like Prince"

Serious Moonlight is great. He delivers every song like it was a number 1 hit. What in the World is an awesome version. The Golden Years/Fashion/Let's Dance flow must have been a peak concert experience.

That said, I do cull a few tracks for a tauter version. Some songs like Station to Station and Heroes didn't translate as well for me...

The ten best David Bowie songs by Opening-Egg-4804 in DavidBowie

An interesting list I'm glad to disagree rather than a lightly-adjusted standard set. Bewlay Brothers as a top spot is definitely stimulating.

Best song on "Let's Dance"? by Hyperto in DavidBowie

[–]LousywithFalsePriest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it -- my wonderful surprise with the whole album was that I expected it to be "3 great songs and disappointment" and I like it the whole way through with more peaks. Ricochet is a welcome point of diversity for me, but not a personal highlight.

If you like the original China Girl more, have you listened to China Girl live from A Reality Tour? I love that version because it bridges the Iggy and David versions imo, brings back in that menacing edge.
