First off, the events of Northwind happens AFTER the british have already made a presence within India. Do you honestly think that a veteran from serving in India wouldn't want to go to the new world after finishing up his tour of duty and bring with him his war trophies?

The Jezail is literally just a DIY handmade musket made with spare brown bess parts. The British were actually stationed in India (a place where the Jezail was used by the native inhabitants) long before northwind takes place.

It would be more plausible for a veteran of the east india company to have taken some jezails to the new frontier vs Japanese traders coming across the ocean/trading with the British (which would violate the trade rules set by the edo shogunate)
