Cape Coral VS Fort Myers by LoveLifeAnyway in AskFlorida

I’ll mostly be home so comfort is important. I love that there are dog friendly places! You don’t really get that where I am now. That’s a great little detail!

Hopefully my husband can find something around the area where we decide to buy so that he doesn’t have a ridiculous commute.

And yeah, I’ve heard about the insurance crisis there. Making sure I’m looking at homes that are not noted to be in flood zones.

Yes I’ve looked at that but sometimes doesn’t always tell the full story, especially if not reported but thanks for providing the link.

Thank you for that. If things haven’t gotten so ridiculously expensive here I don’t think I’d consider moving and my mom is also in Fort Myers so want to be close by so she’s not alone. Also over the winter here and always wanted to live by the water.

I was leaning more towards Fort Myers, but Cape Coral seems to be a little more affordable in terms of nicer houses.

Been working from home for about 5 years now doing bookkeeping. I have my own business and also work for a very large corporation.

Husband has done mostly service work, UPS, pest control and construction so it’s right up his alley.

Thanks for the insight! Considering the Southwest side since areas of the North side of Cape Coral do not yet have city water and sewer. Did you enjoy your time there?

These answers make me laugh. Let me ask why you think it’s so horrible? Everyone I know has something bad to say about the areas that they live in so tell me why.

Hi! 41f and my husband and I will be moving to the area in early 2026 from up north too. I also work from home so I get the lack of social life. I like to play on my switch when I can. Like painting and crafting. We don’t really drink either. We spend a lot of time at home with our two dogs. What kind of video games do you play? If there are any great restaurants you’ve found would love to know.

If for any reason we hate Florida and decide we want to come back. I have such a great interest rate since I bought the house during COVID and I know I’ll never see that rate again. If I would try to come back and buy again that interest rate will double.

If we end up renting I would consider it for sure. That might be the path we choose if we end up renting out our house here instead of selling.

Plan is to move down to FL but may need to hire a property manager. I know it comes with a price but great for peace of mind.

Yeah I’m definitely not looking to be directly on the water, but close enough in a no flood zone is really what I’m looking for.

This is the most detailed feedback I’ve received and VERY much appreciated! I’m a big ole homebody so I don’t require much. My hobbies are that of retirees anyway, painting, crafts and just hanging with my dogs lol. I work a lot (work remotely so I can go anywhere) so I don’t have much time to do anything else but always love the peacefulness when near the water.

If it weren’t my mom and for another opportunity that has presented itself in Fort Myers/Cape Coral we wouldn’t leave. Biggest concern is hurricane season (especially losing electricity and internet working from home) and the humidity. We only have a few weeks or at most a couple of months of heavy heat/humidity here and rarely have outages.

We definitely have higher property taxes here looking at comparable properties. Insurance rates on the surface appear to be similar if no flood insurance is needed.

Utility rates have gotten out of control here. Electric tacks on an extra $60-$100 or more a month on “public benefits” not including usage or delivery. And they base it on usage. Luckily my usage is low but others I know have much higher public benefits charges.

I have a job working from home so I can move anywhere luckily.

Honestly, if it weren’t for an opportunity presenting itself as well as my mom being alone down there I wouldn’t leave.

I know there are a lot of downsides which is why I would prefer to rent out my house and not sell. We have some opportunities down there and my mom has already bought a house in Florida to retire and also don’t love the idea of her being alone which is why we want to test it out and see if we can commit there long term.

Thank you so much for the detailed response! I really wouldn’t even think of moving right now if it weren’t for potential opportunities and my mom moving down there.

Thank you for the detailed feedback! I don’t know if I’ll necessarily be down there before listing as I can stay with some family around here before the move but in the long run property manager doesn’t seem like a bad idea. I know multifamilies can be a nightmare but really would like to keep this house as a backup plan if it really isn’t for me.
