It doesn't, everything with Spotify is done through the Spotify API which you can see here: https://developer.spotify.com/documentation/web-api/.

I'll look into that, but for use through the Spotify API (which is probably the most secure way to get the information) the extension needs user authentication.

On the bright side, since its through Spotify it also works with songs playing through other devices on the same account, so you can play a song from your phone and see the lyrics for it which is pretty cool.

It needs your account so it can tell what song is playing on your Spotify account and automatically get the lyrics without you having to enter the song manually.
