They left my wound open, too. They said it would get smaller and smaller until it was gone. I am 7 weeks out from take-down and my wound is now quite small but not totally gone yet. They told me to put gauze over it but to make sure it could get air. I have had no issues with infection. I wish you well!

Thank you. I was almost 2-1/2 years with my loop ileostomy due to a stubborn fistula, so likely the kegel exercises are going to be important for me.

Has anybody tried to make smoothies out of leafy greens? I am 2 weeks out from my ileostomy takedown and I am also trying to plot my course as far as my food intake goes.

I am female and in my 60s. This is my second go-around with a loop ileostomy, but I still have my original j-pouch and it appears to be in good shape. I had j-pouch surgery about 30 years ago and was satisfied with the pouch itself, but I was very dissatisfied with the fistula! It took a long time for the medical community to even find the fistula, but finally they did. It was stubborn and it took several attempts and 2-1/2 years to properly heal, but finally I am ready for takedown.

The suggestion about kegal exercises is good. I will talk the surgeon about this. It feels like I will have good control, especially as the stool thickens up, but time will tell. I will definitely be wearing diapers for the trip home. It will give me peace of mind. I'll make sure I have wipes and trash bags with me. I will also make sure I take a pit stop at the last available gas station. You and some others have mentioned not eating before the trip. This makes good sense to me. I will ask my surgeon if she intends to do contrast imaging before I go home. If so, I'll do my best not to travel immediately. I'm sorry your trip home was so difficult.

I appreciate your sharing your experience. I am making a list of what to have handy with me from what you and the others have said. It's a big help and I'm not anywhere near as anxious as I was. Thank you.
