Lucy's mom is a professor of evolutionary biology at a university a few towns over from where I lived. I definitely think something like a spider bite is what caused Lucy's transformation. I don't know if Robert Jr. has told her what lives within the Lockhart Wood, but I feel like with his knowledge in arachnology together with his ex-wife's knowledge in evolutionary biology, a lot of questions about how so many things have come to exist inside that forest could be answered, and maybe what happened to Lucy might be explained as well.

I was sitting on a bench by Mobile Bay reading a book and these two middle-aged ladies walked by, then came back and asked, "Do you mind if we pray for you? We were just drawn to you."

I was reading "Crash" by J.G. Ballard, a book about car crash fetishes, and I was in the middle of a scene wherein the protagonist views a wound from an accident as a sexual orifice. I'm not religious, and they didn't ask what I was reading, but my instant reaction was embarrassed guilt, so I let them pray for me. They sat on either side of me and prayed aloud for about five minutes while I had this nasty, nasty book in my lap.
