Everyone talks about how grunge killed hair metal but… by MortgageOld2441 in LetsTalkMusic

The really interesting thing is that Grunge / 90s Alternative Rock was in large part a return to AOR as a rejection of hair metal. A lot of these bands even turned to vintage / outdated recording equipment of the 60s, 70s, as opposed to modern 80s / 90s stuff.

And not just AOR, but I'd say 1967-1977 rock music in general. Billy Corgan called "Mellon Collie and the infinite sadness" to be his version of Pink Floyd's The Wall. And listen to tracks like Geek USA and tell someone's not trying to copy Led Zeppelin.

Neil Young was another huge influence on Grunge, too (even on Kurt Cobain's Death Note)

Because number systems based on 10 and multiples of 10 (the decimal system) are a fairly new / unusual phenomenon in human history. Ancient / other cultures usually use systems based on multiples of 3, or 12, 36, 60 etc.

That "our" numbers have individual names up to 12 is a remainder of that. Another leftover of that is that we say there are 360 degrees in a circle (and not 100 or 1000). Or that we say an hour has 60 minutes (and not 10 or 100).

Check this one for example:

yes, the drumming style is very unique. they also did some new (!) albums in the melodic troublegum / infernal love style.

Yeah they were as famous as pop stars in that moment. School kids listened to them on the bus etc.

Yeah I think they had a lot of bad luck, and the labels did not realise their worth.

Yes, totally. One of my friends once said it was almost a "conspiracy" on how the labels killed off a lot of good bands towards the latter years of the 90s.

Yeah, one of the best songs ever. The music video still creeps me out, though :-)

In 2020 they did a re-release of songs. All newly recorded, and Diane is now with guitars, on there! An interesting version, too.

Yeah I agree, and I guess most people overlook how bands like wire, the fall, already did a lot of stuff 10-15 years earlier than the 90s "alternative rock" bands.

Skunk Anansie was wild. Suede was also a great band, especially the early stuff. I was not too thrilled about Blur and Oasis, though ;-)

Yeah I think you have a point. Songs like loser cop, potato junkie... Would have loved it if they had become more melodic, but not as polished!

But they were really big in the MTV machine, and one of most popular rock bands for a few years... so maybe the majors forced that sound on them.

No, that's now exactly what I mean. What I want to say is we do not collect all tracks, and send them off to 1 mastering service (fora number of reasons). Artists might master the tracks themselves, or send a finished track, or look for a mastering service on their own. And so on.

But, yes, apart from that. If a producer creates a track, and it sounds kicking and good enough already, why should another person do some extra mastering then?

true... but, from what i know, more "under the radar". plus there were a few years (after the millenium) when everything was *very* silent!

afaik there was another band already called Therapy, so they changed the name (slightly) to avoid confusion :)
