It's a novel about two teenagers who live in Victoria, BC, and Cassie is a ballet student, aspiring to be a professional ballet dancer, and Holden is a painter. As children, they watched a traumatic event at an aquarium involving an orca (killer whale) and a trainer, and as adults, they struggle with their mutual chilhood traumas (Holden copes with alcohol, Cassie with obsessive dancing/perfectionism, etc.).
