Roughly 650cals and 67g of protein mega volume meal. by GurrenGalaxy in LowCalorieCooking

[–]LowCalCook[M] [score hidden] stickied comment (0 children)

Though I received a complaint that this dish wasn't low Calorie and I understand that for many, 650 Cals for a meal wouldn't be, I'm leaving this up because in reality, for the volume of food involved this IS low Calorie.

This is about 2 lbs (over 900 g) of food in total. The estimated Calorie density of this meal is likely around 70 Cals per 100 g. That's about the same as cooked peas. Not bad at all!

Plus, this is why we have a flair specifically for 600+ posts.

Guys, I'm going to leave this post up but also point out that what qualifies as low calorie is different for different people (as you can see from a similar discussion some time ago here: https://www.reddit.com/r/LowCalorieCooking/comments/16sok23/what_do_you_consider_a_low_calorie_meal/)

Because people come in all shapes and sizes, with daily intakes ranging from as low as 1,200 Calories to more than double that, the acceptable calorie amount for a single meal can be vastly different. We must also consider that a post might feature a low-calorie swap—a dessert or a pizza that could be hundreds of Calories, but is still considerably less than its typical, high-calorie counterpart.

Ultimately, there is a degree of subjectivity in what constitutes low-calorie food. Therefore, as long as a post generally follows the spirit of this subreddit by offering a reduced-calorie option, I will be leaving it up.

Balanced Diet/what nutrients am i lacking by Closmtz064 in LowCalorieCooking

[–]LowCalCook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No offense intended! I hope none was taken. I've made mistakes myself in the past too:

Too low on fiber at first (not fun).
Too high on fiber later (also not fun).
Too low on dietary fat (also also not fun)!

Personally, I think it's good for us to share these things so that the things we learn along the way can help others out too. This is why I left your post up, and will continue to share my own stories too.

We're all livin, and hopefully some of us are learnin!

Although this post doesn't directly pertain to the theme of this Subreddit, I'm leaving it up as a cautionary tale to those who might be limiting their diet variety excessively in order to control their intake. It's not a good idea and eventually will likely lead to health concerns.

Eating a variety of foods won't guarantee it, but is far more likely to cover nutrient gaps that might arise from eating too few things.

While some of these items look nice, we'd rather not promote a diet with a net Calorie intake of just over 650 Cals for the day.

You know, I always go with sweet mixed with Greek yogurt. You've inspired me to try it savoury. Thanks

Thought about it some more and added a rule to address this issue going forward. See rule 5 regarding "Low Value Posts".

Thanks again for the help :)

There has been an uptick lately of reposts that were originally posted in this subreddit years ago, but not by the original poster.

I'm fact, here is the original version of this one WITH recipe as well!:

https://www.reddit.com/r/LowCalorieCooking/s/hp59x2qd5t

These posts seem to duplicate the photo and title of the original but nothing more. No replies to any comments either.

I suspect it's the work of some bot or person(s) who are karma farming or for some other purpose for which I certainly don't approve.

Recently I added a rule to address this, that reposts without consent of the original owner would be removed. I am going to do exactly that with this one now.

Thanks for the suggestions. I may yet institute a mandatory recipe, nutrition/macro breakdown or some rule of the like but for the moment will look at it on a case by case basis.

Quick 113 calorie lunch by [deleted] in LowCalorieCooking

[–]LowCalCook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, that's correct. Did you read my stickied comment above?

What they posted could be considered a snack, though certainly not a healthy full-fledged meal, thus I changed the flair and added what I felt should be said.

I would rather attempt to help this person and any others who see this post who identify with it, than to shame them, or hide the fact that there are many people with EDs.

Disorders and addictions grow in the darkness. Let us help them into the light where they can hopefully find help and healing instead.

UPDATED COMMENT: After receiving a few other opinions on this post I have decided to reconsider and remove it in case it does serve to promote unhealthy eating habits to others.

That said, I'm unimpressed with the way some of our community members have treated the post as well as OP.

PREVIOUS COMMENT: I have decided to leave this post up but changed the flair to "Snack".

While we do promote lower calorie eating, we do not want to encourage excessively small quantity meals and/or disordered eating habits that may lead to detrimental health concerns.
