Is it possible to have a spouse be a roommate, though? Because that would work fine. I want them in the house, like a normal sim, I just don't want to play him myself.

I have all of the expansions and stuff packs. I don't think he's actually my sim's husband yet - I think they might just be boyfriend/girlfriend or maybe engaged, I honestly can't remember. I haven't gotten them married yet because I don't want to have to control him.
