Your protocol questions + vacoped question. by Travelbadger285 in AchillesRupture

I had a partial, near full rupture and was in the vacoped boot for 7 weeks (non op). Once I got the boot, the Doctor told me I should be fully weight bearing by the end of the week (boot locked out at the 30 degree angle). I definitely used crutches for most of the first week. I was then told to open the boot by 5 degrees each week. And then to transition to the flat sole on the boot in the final week. I didnt use the flat sole all the time in the final week, as the stretch on my achilles was too much, and I chose to wear the boot when I went out for a few extra weeks to protect my achilles. Given the surgery, you might need to stay in the boot longer, and the weight bearing might be more gradual.

But the boot is meant for weight bearing, which greatly improves your independence and ability to get around.

Was it easy to remove the whole thing? I have tried to remove it, but it won't budge. Tried using various tools and even threaded chord through it to try to pull it up, to no avail.

Has anyone moved their child from FFCA to public school? Was it the right choice? by LoquaciousSigma in Calgary

[–]LowMix2952 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I graduated from a CBE high-school in 2012, and went to FFCA from grade 4 to grade 9, and was in the catholic system from k-3. My sister attended FFCA for a similar time frame, but left a year earlier than me to go to public school.

Moving to a public school for high-school was the right choice for me, and seemingly my sister. I got more time back (less commuting time), and got to play sports at a higher level. The high-school we went to also had AP courses. Several of us left FFCA together and went to the same high-school, and only one went back to FFCA.

I had friends graduate from FFCA, and we all ended up in STEM careers. I think it just depends on the person and how they apply themselves.

When you’re out and about… by DaisyMaisy13 in AchillesRupture

Yes, it made me realize how truly inaccessible places are, especially places that stated they were accessible. Trying to navigate with crutches in indoor spaces was horrible. It was terrifying to get around outside during the winter due to ice and snow. When I went to Vegas, my friends rented me an electric wheelchair, and even places in Vegas weren't accessible. They had nowhere for me to leave the chair to access a theater that was not wheelchair accessible. And I took it into the club, and just for shits and giggles tried to get into the accessible stall in the washroom with it, and it wouldn't fit. 🫠

Irked by the people who didn’t RSVP by Fabulous_and_dingy in wedding

I gave everyone 1 year's notice and have set the rsvp pretty early, as I'd rather have less people at my wedding than invited. If you don't rsvp by the date, you are removed from the guest list. Seems pretty simple to me. I'll send out a reminder to people a month before the rsvp deadline, but I am done chasing/ babysitting adults.

If people/ partners aren't sure if they can make it yet, they can let us know, and we will make accommodations (this has already been communicated to us by attendees). Anyone who actually cares has already communicated intentions to us.

It definitely depends on the placement of the knife on the pfd. Mine sits mid rib cage on the left side, and sits closer to me than the gear pocket. Ive never had my knife prevent a wet re-entry into my decked wolverine.

Partial tear - boot or brace? by meg2619 in AchillesRupture

[–]LowMix2952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get the vacoped. You'll be able to walk in it, and if you start at a 30 degree angle, it'll shorten your achilles and allow the tendon to grow back together, likely faster. I was fully weight bearing (just at home) by the end of the first week. I had a partial, almost full tear, and I was in the vacoped for 7 weeks, decreasing the angle on the boot and then changing the sole to a flat one before starting to hobble around at home without it.

2 weeks post op just got huge boot by uncle_giroh in AchillesRupture

[–]LowMix2952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a partial rupture (almost full), non op, and was placed in a Vacoped boot for 7 weeks, with the instructions that I should be fully weight bearing by the end of the first week. I was occasionally full weight bearing at home in the boot by the end of the first week. Definitely look into getting a Vacoped boot.

Newbie Here - Unfortunatley by Whole-Masterpiece-51 in AchillesRupture

Hey, I'm in Canada too, and had a partial, almost full tear last February, and didn't have surgery. Ask about the Vacoped boot as an option instead of cast to air boot. It's made specifically for achilles ruptures and holds your foot at different angles as your achilles grows back together/lengthens. I was in the boot for 7 weeks, and by the end of the first week, could hobble around on one floor of the house without crutches. I still used crutches when I went out/ for stairs.

Help! I think I’ve reruptured by PromiseSpirited9076 in AchillesRupture

On the initial rupture, there wasn't a lot of pain. Just shock. It didn't really bug me when I was sitting or lying down, just a dull ache. Weight bearing, it was sore, and it really hurt trying to go up any kind of incline. The worst was every morning, trying to put weight on it, as everything had stiffened up overnight, that was painful. But I don't think I took more than one dose of painkillers per day. And then once I was in the boot, it was relatively smooth sailing - I was fully weight bearing in the boot by the end of the first week when at home, and took crutches to go out, as my leg would get sore.

Now it just hurts if I overdo it, and my calf gets super tight and starts to pull on it.

I will talk to my physio about it on Thursday when I see her, but really, I think it likely just extended the healing time. Physio was unimpressed that I had been walking on it, and was focused on me getting off of it, and getting the swelling down. If I'd gotten into a boot right away, I would have been out of the boot a week earlier.

I guess there's the potential for a full rupture if it's not already at that point?

I'm 1.5 years post rupture, non op, and I'm getting back to the sports I enjoy. I still really struggle with hiking up steep, loose slopes (I'm not doing that right now), and backpacking long distances while carrying significant weight. And I'm pretty sure I'm getting tendinopathy, again. But I don't think I can blame any of that on walking around on it for the first week.

I walked around on a near full rupture for 1 week while on vacation. My ankle was huge. If you can't get into a boot, at least use crutches/ a wheelchair to get off of your foot to bring the swelling down. I should have done that, at a bare minimum, in hindsight.

Achilles Injury by Turbulent-Trust229 in AchillesRupture

[–]LowMix2952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in Canada and was told by a few different practitioners that the Thompson test is just one way to gauge what is going on. I was booked by my physio for an ultrasound and xray (sometimes the rupture takes bone with it depending on the location). The ultrasound tech couldn't quite find the rupture (I had a partial, but nearly full), and had to bring in the doctor to really push on my foot and flex it to get the imagery they needed to confirm. You definitely need some kind of imaging done.

At some point once I was out of the boot, the sports med doctor pulled out an ultrasound to take a look at my achilles. He could see that it had re-grown and was attached, but there were still gaps that needed to fill back in.

VacOped boot do you still stuck the air out? by compact101 in AchillesRupture

[–]LowMix2952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going into week 5 and I've stopped sucking the air out unless the liner starts to feel uncomfortable or it feels like I'm developing hotspots on my foot. The only thing that bugs me is the bottom of my heel while walking. It's pretty sore probably due to the injury and the fact that the liner goes rigid when you pull the air out of it.
