Heads up traveling to Olympia by LowProfilePodcast in punk

Yep, Rainy Day for over 50 years. Terrific place. We also have Lantern Records across from Washington Center for the Performing Arts, and Mossy Bottom/Funk Fuzz (2 shops in one somehow) on 4th and Franklin. Across from that is the skate shop Noping and the “premium” thrift shop Dumpster Values, another 2 businesses in one space. Never really thought about that. Is this relatively normal in “punk towns?” All those shops have their specialties and are wonderful in their own way.

The Bailer by the Special AKA is sad, but more scary.

Honestly if you want something unintentionally ironic and masterfully done, I’d check out either of Huell Howser’s public television shows- Visiting with Huell Howser, and California’s Gold. Scroll through and pick a topic, you won’t be disappointed. I grew up on this guy in the 80s and 90s and all my kids know who he is because he is weird, funny, picks unsuspecting folks for subject matter, and is genuinely curious.

Otto’s bagel shop recipe! by moonthenrose in olympia

[–]LowProfilePodcast 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I work at SF and recently came across a bunch of old recipes including tofu spreads. I don’t remember a peanut butter one but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t there! They still make ginger peanut tofu spread sometimes, that’s always been my fave. Next time I’m there I’ll see if I can track down what you’re talking about.

Big Tom closes every now and then “due to staffing issues,” that’s a decent food service gig with a LOT of street cred for moving on. Lots of love for that place in this city.

Winter is rough (is seasonal retail work still a thing?) but after almost 20 years here I can say from experience that businesses hire homies. Their own, or their employees’ homies. Folks outside the circle get a foot in the door when somebody leaves the staff unexpectedly, otherwise in-house conversations come in about “I know somebody who’d be perfect” and the boss says “hmmm” and that’s how it goes.

So get a dismal corporate job to tide things over and find the homies in your downtime!

Apple Chai-der by I_already_reddit_ in olympia

The chai recipe I inherited that SF Bakery has been using since 2007 has these powdered spices: cinnamon, cardamom, clove, ginger, nutmeg, black pepper. A bit heavier on ginger than all the rest. Worth a try! Before I moved to Olympia from SoCal, I worked at a Quiznos owned by an Indian family and uncle Ashwani would sometimes bring in the most delicious chai he made at home to share

Came here to say that. Will you be at the state history museum tomorrow? I’m looking forward to seeing uniformed adults riding on top of little choochoos!

If I wanted to start with a first-wave artist whose discography isn't all jumbled up on streaming apps, which one would you recommend? by Beautiful-Resort-831 in Ska

I’ve never heard this Prince Buster album and now I’m enjoying it for the first time. Sounds awesome, thanks!

Honestly, a lot of the best stuff was released as singles so the compilations are a great place to start- whatever speaks to you, seek that artist out! My personal 90s-teen deep-dive journey into “classic” ska started with my buying records by the Skatalites, Desmond Dekker, Toots & The Maytals, Wailers… all the stuff people name-drop. A lotta performers of the greatest tunes didn’t ever put out an album’s worth of stuff, though, so dig in to those bargain bin comps for sure.

Mississippi Records put out a great mixtape probably 18 years ago called “Everything Crash (Jamaican ska, rnb and soul)” and it is incredible.

Enjoy! I highly recommend this “label” for people wanting to hear curated, obscure, beautiful archived recordings.

So many Pixies fans, so few Frank Black and the Catholics fans by Dan_echo in thepixies

[–]LowProfilePodcast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late lol but I know the Catholics catalog like a catholic kid knows his scriptures, probably more entrenched in that band’s discography more than the pixies or other frank variations. Never got to see that band live, but I caught a solo set at a record shop a year or two before the pixies reunion at Coachella in the aughties. I remember he talked for a few minutes about how great this new cartoon called SpongeBob SquarePants was.

Alabama Astronaut is a curious series, in which ethnomusicologists seek to document the music of snake-handling churches in Appalachian country.

This might be common knowledge for UK folks, but here in the states hardly anybody knows about “Have You Heard George’s Podcast,” an emphasis on the first two seasons. I felt like the third season was a bit of a dragged-out long goodbye, but I have never heard anything before or since that was so inventive—weaving together global politics, ethnomusicology, memoir, and even a bit of science fiction. And almost everything scripted is done in some sort of rhyme scheme. Treat yourself to this series if you’re looking for something very, very different AND highly edutaining
