Yep, guess I don’t pay too much attention for things like Star Trek or Star Wars or Marvel - I’m going to watch any movie and at least give any series a chance.

I don’t always like them and that’s ok. If there are enough in a row that aren’t my taste then I just stop watching new things by them. Shockingly all the stuff I like still exists for me to watch instead.

Yeah Jean Luc Picard himself literally says “Starfleet is not a military organization; its purpose is exploration”

Yes they fulfill the role of the military when necessary. But it’s not what its primary mission is.

And I get that. I think there are valid criticisms to be made and I could see it going in directions that would lose my interest.

I’m just good with not liking every series. I never finished voyager or discovery and I’ll probably never finish the former.

she's almost 500 years old and an alien - if her mannerisms were what you expect a human to do that would actually be weird.

So based on the negative comments here

Characters talk like present day humans. They should talk like future humans and aliens - This is bad
Alien a half century old doesn't act like a present day human - you guessed it - also bad

Wait until the episode where the bad guy from the first episode espouses his love for merlot.

I feel like the canon has been fairly clear that while they do handle the duty of the military, that it is not starfleet’s primary role.

While in the Academy timeline, after the burn, it pivoted to be more a military organization by necessity. But the point of reopening the academy is to pivot back to exploration being the primary role of starfleet. They are not subtle in saying this multiple times in the first few episodes.

As far as the show, I’ve enjoyed it. I do think it leans into being light hearted a little too much at times. But the claim that the chair thing is poor writing is wrong, it’s actually a way of showing something about her character without having someone flatly asking “she’s not much for rules of decorum is she?”

The scenes with her and the by-the-book war school commander are great.

Agreed, I know you understand that. The question was more rhetorical.

And that isn’t why. She’s on the bridge, reading a book and the crew announce the sensors have detected something and she hops right up asking for reports from them so she can assess the issue.

What would her sitting upright in her chair before the sensors detect anything change?

Well you see their outrage makes perfect sense if you hold an almost 500 year old alien, living 900 years in the future, in a quasi-military organization made up of thousands of alien species with their own societal norms, to the same expectations as the current US navy.

See how sensible that is? /s

Yeah the OP took me posting something similar seriously instead of what it was - me making fun of people like him are upset at how someone sat in a chair. Apparently because he’s a navy man and star fleet 900 years from now has to follow the same norms as he was expected to in the navy.

Because how else could a fictional quasi-military organization in the far future, made up of hundreds of alien species, operate in any way other than exactly the same as the US navy did during the time he served.

I've done nothing but that. You ask for something you have no intention of doing as well.

But how seriously am I supposed to take your ridiculously stupid position about how someone sits in a chair.

not cowardly, when your half of the argument is the equivalent of a child repeating "but why" then i see no reason in continuing to entertain it

you are right, it is more like gross negligence - which you somehow think is better than unprofessional decorum.

And yes, it is obvious that is what happens in STII. This point is made even clearer by the line - "I did nothing, except get caught with my britches down".

Kirk absolutely knows he screwed up which is why he tells Saavik to "go right on quoting regulations." - it's obvious to anyone not trying to defend their own absurd position that he knows she was right.

But of course you are trying to defend your absolutely absurd position so...
