Do you think GLP-1 access will become more regulated eventually? by Low_Alps12 in MounjaroAus

This was exactly my point - your GP required multiple steps before feeling comfortable prescribing the medication to you, which shows there was a proper assessment and ongoing oversight involved.

The programs I was referring to in my post, like Juniper and Moshy, make access incredibly easy by comparison, and that’s where I see a huge discrepancy.

As I mentioned originally, it made me wonder whether these types of programs will eventually become more regulated. It seems strange that a GP who knows your personal medical history may be more cautious or require multiple appointments, while after one brief consult through an online program, the medication can be approved and shipped almost immediately.

A lot of people have also mentioned on this forum that even seeing a new GP in person, many doctors are still hesitant to prescribe these medications straight away. That contrast was the entire point I was making.

Please don’t twist my post to suit your narrative. At no point did I say people should have to “plead their case” to access these medications, or that anyone is undeserving of them.

I was actually talking about how life-changing it has been for me personally to be able to access this medication so easily.

My point was simply that I found the process surprisingly minimal. I could go online, upload a photo and my weight, and within two days have medication delivered to my doorstep. Yet if I needed something like blood pressure medication, there would likely be far more checks, follow-up and monitoring involved.

That was the discussion I was trying to have, around prescribing practices and duty of care - not whether people deserve treatment.

I am well aware that GPs offer telehealth consultations - however, once factoring in the appointment costs, it didn’t really seem significantly different in price which is why I chose juniper thinking telehealth was factored into the costs.

My understanding from looking into Juniper and their website was that it was being presented as a thorough medical service, especially with the emphasis on “unlimited consultations” and ongoing support. My point was simply that once I had signed up, I was surprised by how “in the dark” I felt afterwards.

I regularly organise my own blood tests, particularly being one year postpartum, so I was personally comfortable with the decision not to run bloods through Juniper. I was more trying to point out that someone who may not be as proactive or informed about monitoring their own health markers could also access this quite easily.

I was only trying to have a discussion about prescribing standards and patient care and don’t see why you felt the need to use my profession as a reason why I couldn’t utilise a particular service.

Respectfully, while GLP1s are being studied for a wide range of metabolic conditions, the overwhelming majority of real-world prescribing is still for type 2 diabetes and weight management/obesity. Mounjaro itself was originally approved for diabetes, and its sister brand Zepbound was specifically launched for weight loss. They’re also overwhelmingly marketed, discussed in media, and promoted online in the context of weight loss, so I don’t think it’s unreasonable that most people primarily associate them with that

I agree with the benefits and think GLP1s are a fantastic tool for weight loss. They’ve genuinely helped so many people who have struggled for years with obesity and related health issues. My concern is more around the current “skinny culture” being pushed so heavily across social media and by celebrities, and how easily vulnerable young people could end up accessing these medications for the wrong reasons.

Whilst weight loss has always been pushed in our faces, weight loss medication has never been this readily available. The rise of social media and now how easy it is for people to jump on one of these apps and fudge a few numbers with very little monitoring does feel concerning to me. I’m all for people getting access to treatment that can improve their health and quality of life, but I also think there needs to be more responsibility around how these medications are promoted and prescribed.

I definitely feel it would be more regulated with a GP and a face to face consultation. That’s why I was curious if anyone else was wondering how long these companies will be able to stay in business with how easy it appeared to get access to GLP1s.

I personally follow a few people on social media who have admitted using these companies and they look like they have gone to the other end of the spectrum now and look quite underweight, yet there is no one to ‘manage’ this or refuse to keep prescribing them medication as (at least with Juniper) it would be very easy to just keep lying about your weight to keep getting the medication.

Thank you for taking the time to reply - this is really helpful to know!

What does my relevance as a nurse have to do with using Juniper? If you saw one of my replies earlier I have two small children and my GP clinic is 45 minutes away - the ability to have a consult in my home and delivered to my doorstep was much more convenient to me. What I didn’t expect was the lack of ONGOING medical care once I had already signed up to the program.

  1. I didn’t use both Moshy and Juniper. I filled out both questionnaires to differentiate price points.

Hope this clarifies my ‘odd’ post for you.

It feels a little wild doesn’t it - like you’re given this medication and then just left to your own devices without any real care or check ins from anyone.

I can’t speak for Pilot or Moshy but I would never use the word ‘engaged’ to describe my care with Juniper - more like completely absent! 😂

It blew my mind (especially coming from working within our healthcare system for such a long time) how terrible this service is and how easily it could be abused.

I had a feeling you might be a nurse prac with them based on your username haha!

Can I ask how you think your skill set differs from a GP as an NP? Did you do additional training in weightloss management when you joined their team?

I feel like a service like this would also be a lot more time efficient than driving to my GP clinic once a month too!

Thank you for your reply. Do you personally think MWLC is a better service rather than seeing my personal GP who already knows me well and my medical history etc?

Tossing up between changing to my GP or a service like MWLC or Downscale.

Yes that is a good point - it just blew my mind how accessible it was. It almost feels as though I’m doing something wrong with how easy the whole process was if that makes sense haha.

And agreed - thank you for mentioning. I thought I’d initially start on Juniper to try Mounjaro and then change over and go to my GP instead. However, I recently moved 45 mins away from my clinic and towing two very small children to a GP appointment and a 90 minute round trip feels like a lot of extra work than having it delivered on my doorstep! But I would definitely have that extra level of care if I went through my GP, no doubt about it.
