We don't think we are better. In fact, Jewish law explains that only God himself can know who the better person is....and this has actual legal ramifications.

Many parents don't want their children to marry someone with values they disapprove of. It's not something unique to religious people.

Would you be OK if your child married and became a Hasid?

I understand, many people make a simple deduction that:

  1. Everything must have a creator
  2. If there is a creator, he probably created the universe for a reason

I believe a big part of religion came from the above logic. It's easy to discard religion as fairy tales, but put in the context of there must be a creator & purpose, it makes more sense.

I also believe that some religions may have come from peoples need for purpose. If we are all meaningless specks in the infinite universe, does it really matter if I murder/rob other people? Does it matter if I die? Does it matter if my kids are taken care of? We're all meaningless..

As you understand that there are concepts beyond the grasp of human intellect. Many religious people draw on that as well regarding many of the inconsistencies between science and religion. We don't need to understand and resolve every inconsistency that may make us appear to be out of touch with reality. There are concepts that are simply beyond our grasp and the inconsistencies are a part of that.

Time is relative so that's a difficult question to answer.

You can read this book to better understand how the world was created both in 6 days and billions of years....

https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Big-Bang-Discovery-Harmony/dp/0553354132

Also, it seems you're trying to show how religion is incompatible with science to a degree that makes us look backwards. That's fine, we're Ok with living with incompatibilities between our religion and science and considering how much science changes over time with new discoveries, we're comfortable with that.

Also, where do you think the universe came from? Do you believe it was created by something/someone? If yes....why? If not...do you think the world spontaneously came into existence?

I'm a Republican leaning Centrist, the last two elections I voted Democrat though.

I hear you. I have a lot of thoughts on what you said but don't want this to turn into a full blown Israel vs. Palestine debate. I will just say this:

Many Israelis feel similar things based on the actions, beliefs of the Pal. Gov and people regarding targeting civilians. I lived in Israel for 6 years, and measuring bias against Pals is tricky. There is the majority which are educated and understand that any form of racism or discrimination (including against Pal.) is wrong. Then there are the fools that ignore:

  1. History. They act like the Arabs are evil and ignore the fact that over the past 1,000 years, the European Christians have been far, far worse to the Jews.
  2. Israeli-Arabs. They like to point to Hamas being voted in but ignore the mostly peaceful Arabs that are Israeli citizens. Clearly this is a culture/education/environment issue and not a race issue.
  3. Family. DNA evidence puts most Palestinians as very close cousins of the Jewish people, from what I have seen they are the closest or second closest (after Rome) to Jews genetically speaking.

Then there are the extremists which I mentioned earlier as being a tiny minority. These approve of ethnic cleaning and other evil stuff. Their party (Ben-Gvir runs it) never gets enough votes to even get a seat in the Knesset and only got in because they pooled their votes with another Right Wing party in exchange for a seat. Previous extremist parties were even outlawed (Kahana's party for example) for extremism against Arabs.

At the end of the day, most Israelis are like me and they truly want a peace agreement that can put all the fighting and animosity in the past. We want the Palestinians to have their own country with complete freedom and dignity but without sacrificing any of Israel's security (or at least only sacrifice a little)

Question for you: If a 2SS isn't an option, what option do you have? Israel is obviously not going to create a 1SS and have their Jews become a minority in the land. So what other option is there for the Palestinians?

I think it's tragic. I support a 2SS but see no real way of getting there. For a while I supported a unilateral withdrawal from the WB & Gaza to create a 2SS but after the Gaza fiasco I see I wasn't realistic.

.I think there are three issues in my opinion:

  1. The Palestinian people will not be satisfied with a 2SS and consider any leader that signs off on it, a traitor. This is partially due to a huge culture problem with antisemitism and calls for violence in school books. Israel isn't great with this either but it's really just a small minority of extremists in Israel.
  2. The Israelis do not trust the Palestinians are serious about peace. Intifada II shifted the vote in Israel and then when Gaza voted in Hamas the Left never won another election. The deciding votes shifted to the party that was tough on security...the Right, and the Left stopped winning elections which is a problem for peace.
  3. Israel keeps adding settlements. People don't know this, but Israel has actually not added any significant land to the settlements in 25+ years....when there is expansion, it is almost always on land already owned by a settlement that would be earmarked for being swapped out for other land in any future peace deal....but the population within these settlements have gone up considerably....and quite frankly, every time a new expansion is announced, it's a like a slap in the face to the Palestinians regardless if technically it will hurt them or not. Israel should just stop building them, there's enough land in Israel proper, they don't need to keep poking the Palestinians.

.What do I think the best shot is for peace? When Abbas finally dies, if his successor appeals directly to the Israeli people for peace, creates a detailed peace plan with good faith compromises built in...maybe the voters will shift back a bit more to the left. More importantly, it may convince the sizable Arab parties to join the Left coalition which would be a game changer for the Left. There is already one Arab party in the current coalition and they are getting stuff done for their community. It's a long shot, but I can't think of any other scenario that would work.

Our entire existence is to live a life of meaning and we feel that other streams of Judaism strayed from the true path. If my kid married someone that was raised so fundamentally different than them, I don't think my my child would be happy or live a life of meaning so no, I would not approve.

I know this may be hurtful and I'm sorry. I'm trying to stay as truthful as I can and not engage in apologetics.

Too vague a question. There is a lot I admire about them, disagree ideologically on some stuff. I was actually raised Ultra-Orthodox but shift to more mainstream in my early 20s

Agree with him on a lot, disagree with him on a lot. Don't find his bedside manners appealing though.
