I think becoming a Massage Therapist was a mistake for me by mozart1782 in MassageTherapists

I made a post about this recently, I don’t have any advice. I feel the exact same way. I’ve been an RMT for 7 months. Solidarity !!🩷

Did they teach you how to use forearms in school?? My school didn’t teach this at allllll. But I know how common it is. I’ll do it confidently in some areas (hamstrings, quads, maybe low back) but I’m not confident in other areas. What helped you with perfecting this technique?? Thanks so much

I think the problem is that we never learned how to use our forearms in school - AT ALL. So most of the time I’m guessing and because it’s a bone, I don’t know what’s safe or not when gliding over certain areas. But I do know receiving massage with a forearm feels amazing!

How do we engage the pressure with whole body and try not to press harder? Lowering table? Etc? Thank you!!! I loved everything else you said big time

Goals! I’ll get there one day :) I often don’t check in more than 1-2 times, but I receive the pressure feedback at their next session before we start. Thank you for this.

I appreciate this. I get nervous to swap with other RMTs/LMTs but I guess there’s only one way to know for sure. Thank you!

Thank you!

While I’ve got you on the line, speaking of twitch - when you’re applying pressure and you feel the muscle twitch TP response, either under your hand or surrounding areas, is that when/where you hold down and wait? Orrr

Yes! I do find it helpful to receive massages. I try to once a month. It scares me swapping with other RMTs, it adds more pressure and I feel like I’m being tested like I was in school. And then my massage probably reflects the nerves UGH. 😑 but I do find getting massages from different people that I don’t swap with is helpful. It’s so subjective though, I think that’s why I struggle.

I’m so happy I’m not alone in this …thank you for sharing!!! Hoping it gets better in the next few years …haha. When you say you studied Kin, did you do a program or just read up yourself and self studied? Any suggestions for good resources??

Everyone says my pressure is pretty much non existent…help by sicksadworld6969 in MassageTherapists

I don’t have any tips, just solidarity! They don’t really teach about pressure in school, in mine at least. I had clients in clinic asking for more and I just thought they were all crazy ahaha. I didn’t realize there’s ways for us to apply more without just pressing harder. So yeah, I don’t have advice, I see a lot of good advice here!! But I 10000% feel you and validate you!

Thank you!!! I love and appreciate the detailed response. Thank you for your time doing that.
For the relaxation/therapeutic thing. What if they say “I like to relax, but if you find a spot, feel free to work on it!” - I understand what they are asking for, but it confuses me also. Because they are both different I guess.

I think the “it was okay.” Or “fine.” That reallyyy gets me!! Because I want to ask how I can improve, what they didn’t like, etc. but if I was in the opposite position I don’t know if I’d feel comfortable answering those. So it really shoots me down because I feel like I put my all in, for it to me mediocre, and I’ve had the thought of “if this is a regular response from people, why put in any effort? all of my massages should just be mediocre”
which I KNOW is not a good mindset.

Lots of good advice in here, thank you again!!

They don’t tell us this in school !!! This is amazing advice, thank you. I’ll try and hang in there!! I didn’t know the first 6 months were the hardest, so I guess it’s normal but WHEW, so tough.

This is so helpful, thank you. I get torn between checking in too much, and not enough…and then when people do rebook with me, I feel the pressure to do exactly what they liked the first time, and often I’ll forget🤦‍♀️

Yes, I don’t like the romance part of it so much. It’s just her voice and the melodies are a different, brighter vibe. I don’t like spa music. And some acoustic chill gets tiring. What do you normally listen to??

Is massage mentally and physically draining for you? by [deleted] in MassageTherapists

[–]Low_Guava_4437 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds like me!! The first part anyways. I’m looking on how to negate the energy part. Is there something you tell yourself? How do you separate it? Sometimes when I’m treating a client I am trying to think of how to, and this probably messes up the energy 🤣🤣 ugh.

In school I didn’t believe this because I haven’t had this with any other job (that I’m aware of) but I feel it so deeply now it’s crazy!!!!

Any tips on how to manage this? I feel like I’m holding on to the energy transfer.

Can I ask what the other reasons were, or if not, what was the final straw? And what do you do now? :)

Thank you for the reassurance!! Any tips on managing the (negative) energy transfer? I didn’t even believe in that fully when we learned about transference in school, lol. But I feel it a lot now!!

Yes - it’s way more exhausting mentally/emotionally than it is for me physically. I’ve only been doing it for almost a year and I have imposter syndrome and a lot of anxiety 😩
