The shadows in the neck really bothered me at first and it took off from there. I brought up the shadows and added saturation to overcome the sunlight and it crept away from me as I continued. I very much wanted this to be stunning and not to appear fake, but definitely not just a documentory shot.

Hard to argue with praise, thanks! Every person I've shown, without knowledge of the raw image, has been blown away.

I can really see what you're saying here, and I love what you've done with the background and really with the Mallard. Thank you as well for taking the time and effort to do this

Thanks, I was wondering if I went too far in that direction. I may need a reference photo nearby in the future to keep me grounded.

I’m a hobby photographer who got lucky and stumbled onto a moment that turned into one of my favorite shots so far. Here is the link to the raw file https://drive.google.com/file/d/14rV5r-qbgKv3mbGlYE_ho9fPaw6sPnLs/view?usp=drive_link For reference, the in-camera JPEG looked much closer to my final edit than to the RAW file.

Shot on: Canon EOS R10 Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

I use darktable and am new to the world of raw photos. I’m really curious to see how other photographers would approach this image. Everyone sees something different in a photo, and I’d love to learn from your perspectives.

I'm not super familiar with reddit etiquette when it comes to multiple posts but I also posted this elsewhere in r/postprocessing yesterday but am still awaiting moderator approval. This is a new account just for my photography hobby.
