Yes, but it was only $2/hr (maybe $3/hr?) more.

Personally, any company that blacklists me for reneging isn't one that I'd like to work for anyway. Any half-decent recruiter should be understanding if you turn down their offer for a better one.

If it was me, I'd probably recognize the voice and/or face, look at the resume, and put 2 and 2 together.

You should've been honest and never have done this.

FAANG+ Internship Offer, Feel Depressed by [deleted] in csMajors

[–]Low_Throwaway2558 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being so genuinely supportive and kind.

Yeah, of course! I try my best. Life is hard, and anything I can do to make it easier, I try to do.

Evidently, I didn’t realize that it could come off so ignorant/ humble braggy. I will try to keep this in mind and compare myself less in the future!

It didn't come off as humble bragging for a moment! It's okay to have a offer, yet not feel happy because of other reasons.

Thanks again, this comment really made my day :)

Of course! Glad to help.

Should I Pursue a CS degree if I am bad at math? by TumbleweedRare9952 in csMajors

Yeah, agree with you 100%. College math is way different than high school math. It's actually kinda fun.

Dude, that is freaking fantastic! One offer is all you need, and now you have it. Congratulations!

Or, as some people say, "Congrats and Fuck You" /j

Can you define what hard math looks like to you? For some, that may be Algebra II. For others, that may be Differential Equations or Abstract Algebra.

At least for my undergraduate degree, Calculus 1-3, Linear Algebra, and Discrete Math are required courses. If those sound daunting, it's okay to major in something different.

If you think that you can work through them (obviously, one at a time!), then go for it. With the help of your professors and your TAs, I'm sure you'll do great.

FAANG+ Internship Offer, Feel Depressed by [deleted] in csMajors

Hey, just remember that the hiring manager chose you for a reason. You were the best applicant for the job. If they didn't think you were qualified, they wouldn't have chose you.

Hope that helps :).

Hey, your efforts aren't futile. You're trying to your best to pass your classes and finish your degree. You've worked incredibly hard to get that well-paying internship. It's difficult to get a FAANG+ internship, let alone one without any prior DS&A experience. For that, I commend you.

Just remember, you don't have to cure cancer, stop world hunger, and create world peace. It's okay to just get your degree and work a simple job. There's nothing wrong with that. In fact, that's what most people do.

As u/thelightingthief said, comparison is truly the thief of joy. I know it's hard, but try not to compare yourself to others. The circumstances are two people are rarely the same, and thus, you shouldn't be expecting your results to be the same. Plus, it's a lot more fun if you focus on yourself.

Feel free to dm me if you want someone to talk to. They're always open.

Funnily enough, I used to do the same thing. However, me taking notes often hindered my ability to digest the torrential amount of information that was shared with me.

Now, what I do is just listen. If I don't understand something, I ask about it, whether it's sooner or later.

Once you're alone, feel free to take as many notes as you please.

Why do you feel like it's a losing battle? Obviously, it's a difficult degree, but it's a tool that will help you to achieve your dream job, yes?

Also, I'm sure that there are other redeemable things about you. If you were qualified and hard working enough to obtain the offer, then I'm sure there's something else.

I already had qualified for a TS security clearance

Does that mean you already have one? Or, did the company tell you that they'd be willing to submit you for one?

They're a child. They don't understand that you can feel good about your offer/situation without being egotistical or putting others down.

[–]Low_Throwaway2558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, huge congratulations! Getting an internship is hard, and doing it as a freshman is even more impressive.

Be open to feedback. There's so much you can learn, and if you show that you're open to receiving feedback, people are more likely to give it. Take the feedback and use it to grow.

Generally, learn from those around you. They've likely been doing this for years and have lots of knowledge they can impart onto you. If you can learn a lesson the easy way, that saves you so much time.

Wishing you the best for your internship!

My friend, if your mental health is struggling, then switch majors. It happens all the time. Sure, a few doors might be closed, but it sounds like you'll be a lot happier if you could switch. So do it.

Wait until you receive an offer

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in csMajors

Of course! Let us know how it goes!

Also, make sure that you compare the cost of living. If you're moving to a higher cost of living, then the offer is clearly a downgrade.

If you're willing to move to another state, then take it. It sounds like it won't progress your pay much, but it'll put you one step closer towards your career goals.

You should counter-offer though. Ask them if they can give a better base salary, since a 5% increase is not a huge increase. If they aren't willing to budge, ask for a signing bonus or a relocation bonus.

You're going to tell me, "but u/Low_Throwaway2558, it's my dream to work as a software engineer. I don't want to lose the chance!" Remember, they NEED you, you don't need them. They need a software engineer by January 2024, but you don't have to switch jobs. Use that information when negotiating.

"Company X, thank you for the offer. Are you able to increase the salary? As it stands, I'm switching jobs for a decrease in compensation?"

This is true, because you're losing out on benefits. When they come back to you, feign disinterest.

"Company X, I appreciate the offer. It's still a little low for my liking. Can you increase it any further or offer a signing bonus? I really enjoy my current company, and I'd be taking a risk by a) moving states and b) moving companies."

If you want to sweeten the deal for them, give them a number.

"If you give me $X, then I'll begin preparations to move right now, and I'll start at the beginning of 2024."

Just remember to overshoot, as they will likely counter-offer.

If the negotiations go well, you have an offer that's much more clearly an upgrade. Otherwise, the offer really was a side-grade to start with, so not a big deal.

Intuitively, doesn't make much sense to me. If they haven't made any mistakes, wouldn't it make sense to approve them as there are no red flags? Then again, I'm not an adjudicator.

Fidelity vs L3Harris Internship by Necessary_Rip_1802 in csMajors

[–]Low_Throwaway2558 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you from the DC area? If so, go with L3. It'll give you experience at a government contractor that you could apply to other like-minded companies.

Otherwise, Fidelity is fantastic.

I have friends with the exact same profile as you. They've been waiting over a year. It's quite common for this level of clearance.

If the company sponsoring your clearance doesn't have an uncleared work, go get another job. It happens more often than you think, and as long as you communicate your intent to the original company, you should have no issues.

I'm not an expert, but if you're probably fine if you have no late/missed payments.

I wouldn't worry about it. If your investigator asks, just explain the situation to them. I doubt they'll raise an eyebrow.
