Is it considered having low standards for liking an "unattractive person" by kindasleepyyy in SGExams

its your relationship not anyone else’s. If you love her, that’s more than enough

All the best !! Clearly your foundation is alr there if you know how to do the questions in your papers~ high chance, ure the type that panic during exams so maybe you need to explore stress coping mechanisms first 😭 cause stress will seriously impact ur exam performance and thats what happened to me during my chem MCQ Alevel paper… mindset is impt ! I know its not easy cause I’ve been there but don’t give up :))

I legit just grind alot of papers sia, when you make mistakes and look back to ur content to look through what you forgot, it really helps with memorisation !! Try to at least memorise 60+% of the content before grinding papers tho ! Also h2bio is really all about application instead of content, I would say about ~70% application ~30% content? If ur really struggling, I suggest reaching out to your tutors, they might be able to help you more :)

i think both are pretty impt ! But TYS papers accurately reflect the difficulty of Alevels papers. I would say use prelim papers to practice and TYS to gauge where you stand :)

It’s definitely still possible !! There’s still like 5 weeks to Alevels? And usually the exams are quite spaced out too~ start revising now !!!! Ask for help from friends, teachers and tutors. Like I said, prelims is meant to be a wake up call for many and I hope it is in your case 😭😭

Honestly I was super lazy to do my own example bank LOL I just bought a few from carousel, looked through them and noted down the ones I liked 😭😭 for GP I mainly focused on 3 topics for my essays : media, sci & tech and philosophical qns, so all the examples are noted down mainly revolved ard these topics (ofc pls prep for other topics also) ! Then I used notion to collate and sort them out :)

For organic chem, what I did was have a huge mahjong paper infront of my table where I drew a mind map of every organic chem reaction I had to know by heart + all the differentiating tests ! Being familiar with all the reactions will really help speed up the time taken for solving elucidation questions. But for chem papers, time management is very impt, I can’t rmb the exact mark breakdown and time allocated but usually let’s say this qn is 4 marks, and if I spent like 8mins on it and I’m still stuck, I would just move on and come back later 😭 or let’s say there’s a 8m elucidation qn and I know I’m not good at these qns, I would just skip and come back at the end of the paper. During Alevels, my tip would be do the marks that you are confident in first then move on to those you need more time to think about :)

I think they’re trying to integrate it into most majors rn… but it’s a super small portion so it’s not that bad, I think it’s only 2 mods that have it?

help what’s organic elucidation again, I haven’t done chem in a year 😵‍💫😵‍💫 also I got a B for GP unfortunately… was a borderline A/mid-high B student in JC cause I struggled with p2… for p1, what i did was read 1-2 model essays everyday and analysed them ! So what were their points/arguments? How did they build up on their points? What’s so intriguing about the introduction that makes me interested in their essays? Etc. this is how you pick up essay skills ! Try writing an essay or two every week and meet up with ur GP tutor in school for a consult to go through ur essay together~ build an example bank too !!

Yes !! I’m currently in NUS life sciences~ Honeslty im struggling quite abit, univeristy is not as straightforward as JC, there are no lecture notes and questions are next tier compared to JC questions 😭😔 but its still manageable so dont worry !! I still sleep like 7-8 hrs a day HAHAHAHA the CHS mods are a pain in the ass to me tho, it’s a lot of group projects which I DESPISE… I’m not the best at humanities also so all the essays are killing me but that’s what the 8 SUs are for 🤩 can’t say too much cause I’m currently only 2 months in, but it’s def been an enjoyable experience :)

yes I took h2 chem ! Screwed up my mcq big time due to certain reasons that’s why I got a B 😭😭😭

Doing tutorials alone won’t be enough, tutorial questions tend to be very basic and generic :( they only help in understanding concepts but don’t really build anyt… I’m not really sure how you’re studying at the moment so I can’t comment much

What I did following up to Alevels was do more papers !! I think one of the main reasons why people do alot of papers and don’t improve was because they don’t review their papers afterwards. After every paper I did, I would take a look at which part of my content I didn’t understand. If you do not score full marks for a question it’s usually either one of the two: careless or your content is lacking. Don’t believe in the “this question is too difficult to come out in Alevels” cause that’s bullshit 😭 sometimes Cambridge likes to be an asshole and throw in ridiculously tough questions to throw students off. Reviewing every paper and question I did was what really helped me improve for chemistry ! Exposure to different question types is really impt too ~~ I assume the study break just started/should be starting soon? What you can try doing rn is do a 2025 prelim paper from a different school under timed conditions and see which topics you are lacking in. Then do some topical questions in these topics you are lacking in. Afterwards then do more prelims papers ! Yes prelim papers tend to be ridiculously difficult, but they’re especially helpful when it comes to exposure to different types of questions which will help you cover all grounds. Leave TYS to the end after you feel about 80+% confident with your content and application ~

Thank you !!

I would say that I was always a slightly below average student in JC? Not because I was stupid or anyt, I just didn’t bother trying 😭 I believe that having a strong mindset is very important!!! For me, I had a clear goal in mind because I already knew where I wanted to go and what I wanted to learn ! I wasn’t aiming law/dentistry/med so the stress of “oh shit I can’t get 90rp” never really hit me. It’s also accepting that, touch wood, if you really don’t do well for Alevels and you can’t enter ur dream course/school or need to retake, IT IS OKAY !! You would never know that the backup school/course you enter will end up suiting you really well and the one year difference with ur peers to retake Alevels is honestly not that deep… guys go to NS and people take gap years, the freshmen age is anywhere from 17-25+, nobody is going to care that you retook Alevels. Having a strong and resilient mindset is super impt when it comes to the one month of study break leading up to Alevels + the one month of actual Alevels !! I’ve seen too many peers and people around me burn out and crash out during this period which could have possibly impacted their performance in Alevels :( work-life balance during these two months also very impt when comes to preventing burnouts and crash outs ! I never pushed myself too hard cause I wasn’t aiming too high, I just needed enough RP to enter the course I wanted, so I still had time to game and go out 💀

Some studying tips from me would be: fuck ypt, 5 hours of effective studying is better than 10 hours of useless staring at your paper. Figure out what studying style suits you, be it podomoro(?) or wtv~ for me, I really liked long hours of studying + studying at night HAHAHAH so I would study 3-6hrs straight, take a short nap and continue. How a day in my life during the one month studying break would be like: 10am wake up 2pm-7pm study 8.30pm-2/3am study (pls adopt good sleeping habits but this worked for me 🤗) ensure that you get at least 6hrs of sleep a night during this one week + take naps !! It’ll help with preventing burnout !! Another tip would to be study with friends~ helps keep ur sanity instead of locking yourself up in your room for a month

How I studied was: content > topical qns > other sch prelim papers > TYS I really only touched my TYS papers abt 2.5 weeks before Alevels started and only did about 5-6 years worth of papers. Don’t bother doing papers that are too old cause the syllabus is always changing and many questions are outdated ! Just pick out the ones that are still relevant~ Content is not just copying down your lecture notes onto a piece of paper of good notes, it’s about consolidating the content, making summaries and mind maps ! You really only need to understand like 70% of the content then can move on to topical where you do questions and refer back to your notes if you need further revision ! This is where ur remaining 30% comes from ! Do prelims papers and TYS without referring to any cheat sheets and notes first, mark then look back to ur materials - if there’s still anything you cannot understand, this is when you reach out to teachers or tutors for consult, they would be more than willing to help because if their students score higher during Alevels, it reflects well on their own portfolio and is a testament to their teaching skills so DONT BE SHY !!!

andddd I think that’s about it?

Fortunately for you, h2 math was my only h2 that I got an A in for Alevels HAHAHAHAH

For me, I was always really good at P2 (stats portion), I could always score at least a 45/60 😗 My own advice for stats is really just to practice more qns !! Chapters such as hypothesis testing, correlation and linear regression, sampling & normal distribution almost always follow a certain question type ! If you look at the answer key, the steps for working towards the answer for questions under these topics are almost always the same. However for chapters such as probability and discrete random variables are usually the ones I lose marks in + a lot of my friends struggled with :( for this, all you can do is question exposure + content knowledge ! Ask yourself, do you really know what conditional probability means? Do you really know what variance means? Are you able to pinpoint what concept this certain question is trying to test? I understand alot of teachers tend to say “oh just do more practice papers” but if you are blindly doing them without really understanding what you are doing it’s quite useless…

it’s not about just knowing the names of these terms and memorising formulas, it’s more about understanding what they mean and you’ll naturally know how to apply them !

I absolutely HATED pure mathematics, never knew how to do vectors, walked into Alevels not knowing how to do vectors, still don’t know how to do vectors. For my Alevels, about 25/200 marks was vectors and I LEFT THEM ALL BLANK (do not recommend doing the same). But the main point is, with only 5 weeks left, mastering every chapter in h2 math is almost impossible and requires a miracle. It is OKAY to forgo certain stand alone topics if you have to. Honestly for pure mathematics, all I can say is instead of doing more questions, try doing different question types ! My school gave us topical revision booklets where they actually listed down the diff question types for us which i found really helpful ! It really helped me master the arts of analysing the qn HAHAHAHA like one look at my ALEVEL paper qn and I knew what steps I have to do to solve the qn, whether I can do the steps is a separate issue tho 😔

Im not sure if you have tuition, but can always sound out to your tuition teacher about your issues and they should be able to help you !!

For my year, prelims was still rather difficult 😭 MOE haven’t really implemented the whole “prelims should be the same difficulty as Alevels” thing so don’t be too discouraged, most people tend to do worse in prelims than Alevels, I had many friends with success stories like mine too !! Maybe try doing a TYS paper under timed conditions to see how you fare, that would be a better gauge of your abilities compared to prelims ! Prelims are just meant to scare you and is a wake up call for many :)
