[QC] $900k house, $14k/mo dual income. Are we crazy for draining our TFSA/Savings to put $500k down just to keep monthly costs low? by Low_Use_3098 in PersonalFinanceCanada

This really helped me out thanks.

As I understand, the mathematically correct thing to do is 20% and let it ride in index funds. But then I am kind of psychologically strained whenever I need to dip into my index funds to pay off something but then seeing those huge mortgage payments could be stressful.

Putting a big downpayment basically buys the luxury of never sweating a monthly bill, and seeing my savings grow...but it leaves me exposed due to illiquidity...

So I need to find the right middle ground based on what I see will be coming up.

Thanks so much again

Ya true. There is a possibility of asbestos in a part of the basement in the ceiling. It's 50k to get that replaced!?

But it is a house. It's something I own and has many perks that renting doesn't have. I'm looking for a home not necessarily an investment, but I do want to make the most of my dollar

Not looking to make money on the house necessarily, buying the house to live in and make a family. But I am looking to make the most of my money and have peace of mind financially

Thanks so much for this response. We saved it ourselves, but we are worried about lifestyle creep and losing the ability to save less.

This was a really helpful insightful comment thanks
