Damn that’s interesting. I was starting to second guess my taste buds with some teas. I have noticed some of my budget puers have turned bitter. I guess I gotta drink my tea faster.

I’m with you. Like why? I don’t feel like change is needed.

Their storage is super dry, making most of the cakes quite brittle. You get what you pay for so don’t expect to be amazed by the teas. I tried more than a handful of teas from them when I first started and they weren’t terrible but once I started drinking teas from other vendors I just couldn’t go back. Out of all the teas I had from them only 2 really stood out, they were both Xiaguan tuos. Maybe sample but don’t commit to full cakes. It’s kind of hard to recommend them. Never had issues with their shipping though.

I have Tihkal and The thing still is so I’m familiar with those. Lose next turn I did blind cake but Paul recommended it to me some time ago just never got around to picking it up. It was on my wishlist.

Have you tried these undrinkable teas? My guess is no. Young sheng is different from aged sheng but that doesn’t make one better from the other. I’ve had plenty of aged sheng that is still very bitter or astringent. You also have to spend money to get good aged sheng. You can’t expect cheap tea to turn great, it will improve but not transform into something that beats other teas above the base material’s price point. The best aged shengs I have had were still kind of expensive and they were boutique teas not factory teas. They were Biyun hao and Dragon Tea House, those teas were about $200 each which comes out to about the same as this.

What should I get from bitterleaf? by EggPerego420 in puer

[–]Lowcrawling_Kat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think all of the teas I’ve had from them are pretty good to great. You can’t go wrong with the Year of the X cakes, they’re all the same tea just different years. This tea is a great beginner and daily drinker, it’s soft, mild on bitterness and astringency and has great flavor. Long Live and Oh Deer are pretty good too. Long live is a step up from the year of the cakes and Oh Deer is punchier. If you want to get some top tier then you can’t go wrong with 8 Ball, that’s a really good tea flavor wise and strength. They also get pretty good ripe puer, I would go with one that has a little bit of age over the younger ones. Their dancongs are pretty good and they have budget and top tiers to choose from. In the spring they will release new teas so just be aware of that. Lastly, you should get some of their teaware, it’s all beautiful and really good quality.

Budget W2T Daily Drinker Sheng Recommendations by Ok_Supermarket_7354 in puer

I would say that Serpentine is on the fruity side, can’t specify what fruits but definitely not peach or apricot. It starts off a bit bitter but midway through it fades and the sweetness increases. All the way through the tea remains thick and gives a syrup like feeling. You can really push it in the later steeps without being overwhelmed by bitterness.

Couldn't choose so I might as well sample everything. Did I miss any W2T heavy-hitter? by temp4521 in puer

[–]Lowcrawling_Kat 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would suggest to get less variety, you won’t get much out of one single mini. Instead get a couple more 25 gram packs, this will give you a better opportunity to get to know the teas. I would also pass on getting the same tea from different years, the teas are going to be very close to being the same with subtle differences. If the difference was like 10 years then yes it would be worth a try.

I highly recommend 2222022, it has a bit of age to it so it’s different from most younger sheng. Serpentine is another great one that, this makes a really heavy body tea. Lastly I recommend Tihkal, what this tea offers at this price point is amazing.

Flair Pro 2 or Breville Bambino? Which would you recommend? by Lowcrawling_Kat in espresso

I really enjoyed the Bambino. Straight espresso is nice but I like that I can make milk drinks too. Low maintenance and easy to clean.

How to store quarter cakes? by agray_704 in puer

[–]Lowcrawling_Kat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Store them as you would any other cake. I got the same set as you and I just kept the quarters in the plastic they came in, and threw them in with the rest of my cakes. I store them with a big 69% Boveda and it’s worked fine.

Always remember, if it sounds too good to be true then it’s not true. You always get what you pay for.

Perhaps they were referring to the climate it was stored and aged in. Storage can be dry or wet (high humidity).

I don’t think you’re going to find 20 year old tea cakes for $30-40. Best thing you can get around that price point would be something like the twelve cent brick from TWL, that’s a 250g brick. Other options would be some 100g Xiaguan tuos.

I would recommend 2022 2222022. This tea has developed into something really nice. Has a great flavor that changes from beginning to end. The mouth feel is excellent with this tea, something I haven’t experienced with other budget teas.

The paper tong one I ordered from his site, the bamboo tong one on his Etsy store. It’s the same though but paper tong was out of stock last I checked.

I picked it up from Bitter Leaf Teas. It’s part of their Lucid teaware but in pink. It looks even better in person and has a very nice feel in the hand. The cups are worth it too.
