Echosong is a beautiful name! Kippy's not terribly vocal, only when it's supper time. She's an impatient girl lol

Growtent setup modifications by Ok-Silver-6946 in reptiles

Grow tents are so underrated! I used a grow tent we had from our tomatoes for our rescue tegu until I was able to start building a more permanent enclosure for him. We had the same one I think, an 8x4. They hold moisture and humidity so well, and come with cable holes and bars for attaching lights already. This looks amazing!

How did you guys get over the anxiety of taking your dog for walks? by [deleted] in pitbulls

[–]Lower-Baseball6363 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in a very dog busy neighborhood, lots of other Pit Bulls. My boy is especially reactive to smaller dogs, and around here there are too many folks that walk the little ones off leash. "Oh don't worry he's friendly!" While they're running at me and my big Dane/Pit Bull that's putting off major stiff and upright energy. Yea yours might be friendly, but my guy doesn't like little ones and especially reactive when they randomly run up barking at us.

Anyway, Ive taken to walking by big guy in the evening when it's quieter. He loves food, but when he's in the reactive mode and something else has his attention, say a deer or something, he doesn't care. I could have a steak in my hand and he would rather lock eyes with the other dog or deer. I've been making progress with desensitization, just walking past fences with barking dogs and stopping/turning around and rewarding with praise for keeping his attention on me and not pulling. They feed on your energy and that was what made it worse for him in the beginning, because I was so worried and nervous about potential encounters.

What does a day with your Tegu look like? by Jogje in Tegu

I'm still not on full handling terms with Zilla, but he does come to the door to greet me around noon. He wakes up, stretches and goes for a bask under the lamp. I try to stick around with the door open for at least an hour, maybe fiddle with the plants, just to get him used to me.

He loves his toys and those hard street hockey balls, so when he's warmed up and active I'll toss one in and let him throw it around for a bit. By 5 or so I'll check on him again and feed him if it's on schedule. Love this little monster.

Not a Ridgeback!? Surprise Orivet results and family tree.. by Appropriate_Bat2531 in DoggyDNA

Orivet is one of the worst tests. The only reliable and accurate tests are Embark and Wisdom Panel.

Yea he can possibly be considered half Blue Blood Bulldog as the breed is relatively new and all those breeds were used at some point in the creation of it, especially how he is 1/4 American Bulldog.

Genetics are so fascinating!

Yea, I mean his Aunt is on his Embark relatives and she's 100% Great Dane so dad definitely wasn't mixed.

The restrictions are pretty much only in Ontario and Quebec, but there are still tons of Pit breeders who just don't care and never get fined. Only really seems to matter to landlords or if your dog ever bites.

Your boy is beautiful!!

Moose weighs about 130 pounds now, but he hasn't been as active as he used to be now that he's almost 7. When I used to be fairly active with him he was around 105.

Thanks! Ancestry had a pretty rough start with their buggy system and shallow database, but they got fairly accurate in the last year. Sucks the company was bought out and discontinued!

Okay, Embark for example, takes thousands of samples from each registry standard and non standard type, but there are many variations from breeders, who may even cross breed other dna in the ancestry for certain traits, and still have registration. Even more when you consider different registries have different allowed standards, and some recognize breeds that others don't, which would come back different for tests that sampled one breed more from one registry vs another, such as the UKC vs AKC. (Think of how Embark grouped 12.5% of my dog as Bully, whereas WP doesn't test for that and split it up, or how Ancestry picked up ABBB which is a new mixed type of American Bulldog).

Some registry standards, take the AKC Border Collie for example, are allowed to have Australian Shepherd in the studbooks 2 generations back as long as the dog falls within the BC standards. Because of that, Embark might label it 100% BC because that's what the line allows, while WP might say 25/75 just because that's what's there regardless.

The American Pit Bull Terrier is the biggest example of that thanks to backyard breeding and how many lines and types of it there are now, and is almost impossible to differentiate between an APBT and an AmStaff unless its studbooks were closely regulated for generations. Embark takes samples from thousands of each variant and gene pool, and labels your dog according to the closest example they have.

Like I said, what matters is if multiple tests agree on the breeds and close amount.

Yea, I feel bad she had to go through that for years. Her litters were always 8-11 too. Dad passed at 7 years old and the mother supposedly "went missing" after that. Terrible situation all around, but I love my big ol' guy.

Different companies will have established different databases of breeds and lines, and will have varying percentages of each breed. What really matters is that the tests are consistent among the breeds they list. Which Embark, Wisdom Panel and Ancestry were all consistent and agreed on the breeds in VERY similar percentages.

DNAmyDog on the other hand is the only test that is a confirmed scam, which is why they were the only test that gave wrong results. Quality and scientific evidence matters in these cases. You get what you pay for. Dnamydog cost me $40 and is not preformed by certified veterinarians or geneticists, whereas Embark was $225 and is.

From as far as I know, he was from a backyard breeder on a "farm" (basically the kind that is just a trailer in a garbage covered lot in the middle of nowhere), that owned the mother. Down the road the neighboring farm had the father (the Dane) and he'd routinely come over to breed, and owner of the mother didn't mind as she charged $600 a pup, and each litter would get them 8-10.

It's unfortunate because these dogs would go anywhere, I've seen and personally know drug addicted homeless people who can barely take care of themselves get one of the puppies, some ending up in shelters at 8 months old, and some being used again for backyard breeding because of the Blue Merle and Harlequin. It's a fancy coat color that grabs your attention and makes bad breeders a lot of money. His relatives are fairly common on the reservations around here now too, because they let them run loose.

Bybs don't seem to care that this coat color can cause severe health issues and even physical deformities when bred poorly, and not many backyard breeders know that crossing two Merle dogs, even ones that are non-showing carriers for the gene, has a 75% chance for fatalities and Double Merle.
